JAZZALLAHU ANNA MUHAMMADAM MA HUWA AHLAHU
THE NECESSITY FOR A MURSHID
If a person wants to learn any art form or gain knowledge/science he will seek help from an expert in that field. Knowledge of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala Zaat (Being) is the most difficult secret in the universe. It can only be achieved with the help of its experts, the Awliya Allah. Only these people can be accepted as Murshids (guides). The following quotation define the need and guidance of a Murshid.
Hazrat Ghausul Azam- Hadrat Sheikh Abdul Qaadir Jailani Radi Allahu anhu brings home the necessity of a Murshid in a beautiful metaphor. He says: "The heart is the plantation for the Aakhirah (Hereafter). Sow the seeds of Imaan in your heart. Irrigate, fertilise and mature it with regular good deeds. If there is kindness and energy in the heart it will be fertile and an abundant harvest will result. Should the heart be harsh and contemptuous, the soul becomes infertile and barren and no crop will be able to grow. Learn this art of farming by its farmers/experts, the Awliya Allah. Do not think your opinion to be sufficient. Our Prophet Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam says, ?Seek help in every field from an expert in that field?". (Al-Fath-ur-Rabbani, pg. 202)
Hazrat Ghausul Azam Radi Allahu anhu said: "Arrogance, hypocrisy, egoism, are all arrows of Shaitaan aimed at your hearts. One should formulate a strategy to defend oneself from this attack. The correct strategies are explained and demonstrated by the Mashaa?ikh (Guides). You should heed to their commands and act on them. They will guide you on the path of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala since they have already travelled on this path. Ask their advise on matters relating to the Nafs (carnal desires), cravings and other weaknesses because they have also suffered their consequences and are well aware of the dangers and harms of evil desires. They have battled these over a long period of time and can confront, control and defeat them".
(Al-Fath-ur-Rabbani, pg. 150)

asalamu alaikum can anyone provide proof from quran and hadith ( Bukhari/muslim) to support this practice. jazak allah khair Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuThis practice is based 100 % according to Qur'an Shareef and Hadith Shareef:[Surah al Fath 48, Verse 10]: Those who swear allegiance to You, do indeed in fact swear allegiance to Allah; Allah’s Hand* of Power is above their hands; so whoever breaches his oath, has breached his own greater promise; and whoever fulfils the covenant he has with Allah - so very soon Allah will bestow upon him a great reward. (*Used as a metaphor to mean Allah’s power).[Surah al Fath 48, Verse 18]: Indeed Allah was truly pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you beneath the tree - so He knew what was in their hearts - He therefore sent down peace upon them, and rewarded them with an imminent victory.[Surah al Mumtahenah 60, Verse 18]: Indeed Allah was truly pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you beneath the tree - so He knew what was in their hearts - He therefore sent down peace upon them, and rewarded them with an imminent victory.[Surah al Mumtahenah 60, Verse 12]: O Dear Prophet! If Muslim women come humbly to you to take oath of allegiance that they will neither ascribe any partner to Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor bring the lie that they carry between their hands and feet, nor disobey you in any rightful matter - then accept their allegiance and seek forgiveness from Allah for them; indeed Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful. Sahih Muslim, Book 020, Hadith Number 4546.Chapter : Fulfilment of the covenant made with the Caliphs is imperative, the caliph to whom allegiance is sworn in the first instance has an established supremacy over those who assume powers. It has been narrated on the authority of 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abd Rabb al-Ka'ba (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) who said: I entered the mosque when 'Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) was sitting in the shade of the Ka'ba and the people had gathered around him. I betook myself to them and sat near him. (Now) Abdullah (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) said: I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam) on a journey. We halted at a place. Some of us began to set right their tents, others began to compete with one another in shooting, and others began to graze their beasts, when an announcer of the Messenger of Allah (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam) announced that the people should gather together for prayer, so we gathered around the Messenger of Allah (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam). He said: It was the duty of every Prophet that has gone before me to guide his followers to what he knew was good for them and warn them against what he knew was bad for them; but this Umma of Yours has its days of peace and (security) in the beginning of its career, and in the last phase of its existence it will be afflicted with trials and with things disagreeable to you. (In this phase of the Umma), there will be tremendous trials one after the other, each making the previous one dwindle into insignificance. When they would be afflicted with a trial, the believer would say: This is going to bring about my destruction. When at (the trial) is over, they would be afflicted with another trial, and the believer would say: This surely is going to be my end. Whoever wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith in Allah (Azzawajal) and the Last Day and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated by them. He who swears allegiance to a Caliph should give him the pledge of his hand and the sincerity of his heart (i.e. submit to him both outwardly as well as inwardly). He should obey him to the best of his capacity. It another man comes forward (as a claimant to Caliphate), disputing his authority, they (the Muslims) should behead the latter. The narrator says: I came close to him ('Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-'As) and said to him: Can you say on oath that you heard it from the Messenger of Allah (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam)? He pointed with his hands to his ears and his heart and said: My ears heard it and my mind retained it. I said to him: This cousin of yours, Mu'awiya, orders us to unjustly consume our wealth among ourselves and to kill one another, while Allah (Azzawajal) says: "O ye who believe, do not consume your wealth among yourselves unjustly, unless it be trade based on mutual agreement, and do not kill yourselves. Verily, God is Merciful to you" (iv. 29). The narrator says that (hearing this) Abdullah b. 'Amr b. al-As (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) kept quiet for a while and then said: Obey him in so far as he is obedient to God; and disobey him in matters involving disobedience to God. Sahih Muslim, Book 020, Hadith Number 4562.Chapter : Instruction to stick to the main body of the Muslims in the time of trials and warning against those inviting people to disbelief. It has been reported on the authority of Nafi, that 'Abdullah b. Umar (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) paid a visit to Abdullah b. Muti' (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) in the days (when atrocities were perpetrated on the People Of Medina) at Harra in the time of Yazid b. Mu'awiya. Ibn Muti' (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) said: Place a pillow for Abu 'Abd al-Rahman (family name of 'Abdullah b. 'Umar -Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu). But the latter said: I have not come to sit with you. I have come to you to tell you a tradition I heard from the Messenger of Allah (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam). I heard him say: One who withdraws his band from obedience (to the Amir) will find no argument (in his defence) when he stands before Allah (Azzawajal)on the Day of Judgment, and one who dies without having bound himself by an oath of allegiance (to an Amir) will die the death of one belonging to the days of Jahillyya. Abu Dawud, Book 030, Hadith Number 4236.Chapter : Fitan and their predictions. Narrated by 'Abd Allah b. 'Amr (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu): The Prophet (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam) said: If a man takes an oath of allegiance to a leader, and puts his hand on his hand and does it with sincerity of his heart, he should obey him as much as possible. If another man comes and contests him, then behead the other one. The narrator 'Abd al-Rahman (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) said: I asked: Have you heard this from the Apostle of Allah (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam)? He said: My ears heard it and my heart retained it. I said: Your cousin Mu'awiyah orders us that we should do this and do that. He replied: Obey him in acts of obedience to Allah (Azzawajal), and disobey him in acts of disobedience to Allah (Azzawajal).

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Sahih Muslim, Book 020, Hadith Number 4543.
Chapter : Fulfilment of the covenant made with the Caliphs is imperative, the caliph to whom allegiance is sworn in the first instance has an established supremacy over those who assume powers.
It has been narrated by Abu Huraira (Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu) that the Noble Prophet (Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alyhi Wa Sallam) said: Banu Isra'il were ruled over by the Prophets. When one Prophet died, another succeeded him; but after me there is no Prophet and there will be Caliphs (Deputies) and they will be quite large in number. His Companions said: What do you order us to do (in case we come to have more than one Caliph)? He said: The one to whom allegiance is sworn first has a supremacy over the others. Concede to them their due rights (i.e. obey them). Allah (Azzawajal) [Himself] will question them about the subjects whom He had entrusted to them.
Al Fath ar Rabbaani -12
The 'Ulama' [Learned Scholars], the Awliya' [saints] and the Abdal [Spiritual Deputies] are the heirs of the Prophets [Anbiya]. The Prophets are the brokers [Samasira], and these others are their advertising agents [Munadun].
