Hadith in praise of Sayyedina Ameer MuawiyaRadi Allahu anhu Aug 20, 2008 8:08:18 GMT

With regards to mentioning sahih hadith regarding Ameer Muwaiya Radi Allahu anhu I found our elders in a different direction. Please clarify these findings. I was shocked to see this reference in Ahle Sunnah book's

Al Hafidh Jalaluddeen Suyuti in "La'ali al-Masnu`aa fi ahadith al-Maudu`aa" Volume 1 page 424 states:

"Imam Hakim claims that he never came across a single hadith in praise of Muaweyah that was Sahih". La'ali al-Masnu`aa fi ahadith al-Maudu`aa Volume 1 page 424.

"It is recorded in famous book Jami` al-'Usul that many muhaddith scholars have concluded that there exists not even a single hadith in praise of Muaweyah Radi Allahu anhu that is Sahih".
Sharh Mishkat Shareef Vol. 4 page 716

Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani states in Fathul Bari Volume 7 page 104:

"Imam Bukhari on the topic of Muaweyah Radi Allahu anhu wrote a Chapter Bab ai Dhikr Muaweyah because no hadith in praise of Muaweyah Radi Allahu anhu are proven and Ibn Abi Asim and Abu Umar Ghulam Thalib and 'Abu Bakr Nakash wrote on the virtues of Muaweyah Radi Allahu anhu and Ibn Jauzi in Maudu'at wrote about him, then Ibn Jauzi stated in the opinion of Isaac bin Raaviya, in praise of Muaweyah Radi Allahu anhu no hadith is Sahih and that's why Imam Bukhari wrote a Chapter titled bab ai Dhikr Muaweyah rather than bab ai Fadail Muaweyah"
Fathul Bari Vol. 7 page 104

Allama al 'Aini in "Ummdat al Qari fi Sharh Sahih al Bukhari page 994 Volume 7 comments:
"No reports in praise of Muaweyah are proven. If many are present, the reply is that no hadith exist with a Sahih isnad as stated by Isaac bin Rahvia and Imam Nasai, and that's why Imam Bukhari wrote Chapter bab ai Dhikr Muaweyah rather than bab ai Fadail Muaweyah."

"Imam Shafi'I said that the testimony of four companions will not be accepted and those four are Muaweyah, Amr bin Aas, Mugheera (bin Shuba) and Ziyad (bin Abi)"

This view of Imam Shafi'i has also been attributed to him by his student Hadhrath Rabi in Tareekh Abul Fidah Volume 1 under the chapter addressing the events of 45 Hijri. It can also be located in Kitab Mukhthasar fi Ahbar al Bashar Vol. 1 page 100

Muhammad bin Ali bin Shawkani in "Fawa'id al Mujmu`a fi bay`an al-hadith al-maudu`a", page 147 states that:
"Ibn Hibban commented that all ahadith in praise of Muaweyah are fabricated". Fawa'id al Mujmu`a fi bay`an al-hadith al-maudu`a page 147

Al Muhaddith Shaykh Abdul Haqq Dehlavi in "Sharh Mishkat Shareef" - Volume 4 page 716 (published in 1873) after citing the hadith in praise of Muaweyah including the "guidance hadith" Abu Sulaiman cited from Tirmidhi comments:

Abu'l Hasan Quinani in "Thunziyaa as Shari'a al Murfoo'a", Volume 2, Chapter 8 page 7 comments . "Imam Hakim cites from a chain used by Sibt Ibne Jauzi who cites Isaan bin Ruhiyaa that 'there exists nothing in praise of Muaweyah that is Sahih".

Allamah Ibn al-Jawzi al-Qurashi in "al- Mawdu`at" Volume 2 page 24 states:
"Imam Hakim narrated from Abu'l `Abbas who heard from his father, who heard from Ishaq bin Ibraheem al-Hanzali that 'no hadith in praise of Muaweyah are Sahih'.

Shaykh Ismail bin Muhammad in "Kashful Khafa" Volume 2 page 420 states:
'There exist no hadith in praise of Muaweyah that is Sahih" Kashful Khafa Vol. 2 page 420

"Imam Ahl'ul Sunnah Muhammad bin 'Ali Shawkani wrote in his book Fawaid Majmu`a Dhar ahadith Maudu'ah states that in praise of Muaweyah no hadith exists"

All Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam

In relation to your query, there are in fact ahadith related to Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu which have been recorded in books of ahadith.

Since these are from books of ahadith, and sayings directly of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, it is not surprising that you were unable to find any ahadith in their praise, according to the references that you gave.

In the book of Bukhari, there is a whole chapter called 'Dhikru Mu'awiyyata Radi Allahu anhu, in the kitab called 'Manaqib'.

Since Manaqib itself means praise, qualities, eulogy of Imams, and even composing encomium to Imams, as in 'Manqabat', you do not have to go far to see that there are ahadith related to Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah in his praise, not only in Bukhari, but also in other books of ahadith.

The reason for the placement of such ahadith in the chapter versed Manaqib, is exactly because the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam had praised them, thus enabling the Muhaddith (i.e.Bukhari) to record that particular hadith in the relevant sections of his book.

This is not the only book in which you will find the manaqib of Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu, but you will also find these in other ahadith books. Other ahadith books in which the fada'il and the manaqib of Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu are found are in the books of:

Tirmidhi Sharif, in the Bab-al-Manaqib, under 'Munaqibu Mu'awiyatabni Abi Sufyana Radi Allahu anhu, in which there are 2 ahadith-e-Mubarikah which state:

'Hadrat Abdar Rahman ibn-e-'Umayrah Radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam made a supplication for Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu that 'Oh Allah! make Mu'awiyyah guiding, and the One Who Guides, and from him, let the people be guided.'

In the same chapter, Imam Tirmidhi relates another hadith in which it is stated that:

'Hadrat Abu Idris Khawlani Radi Allahu anhu states that when Hadrat 'Umar Radi Allahu anhu took the leadership away (ma'zul) from 'Umayr bin Sa'd Radi Allahu anhu in the region of Hamas, and gave it to Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu the people sarted questioning that the leadership has been taken from 'Umayr Radi Allahu anhu and been given to Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu. To this Hadrat 'Umayr stated 'Think good of Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu, because I have heard the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam say in supplication that 'Oh Allah! Let the people be guided through the means of Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu'.

There are other numerous ahadith books such as the Mishqat Sharif, in which there has been the praise of Syedina Amir-e Mu'awiyah Radi Allahu anhu, but the above few ahadith are enough to negate the saying of any Imam who has claimed that there has not been any ahadith in the praise of Syedina Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu.

At the first instance, it is a matter of conscienceness, that are we going to accept what the Qur'an has stated, when it said:

'Radiy Allahu 'anhu wa radu anhu'

'Allah the Almighty is pleased with the companions, and they pleased with Him',

or are we going to take the saying of an Imam to contest what the reality is. A similar arguement can also be produced in taking the ahadith Of Bukhari, Tirmidhi, and others like Mishqat Sharif to hold a greater stance or the saying of what Imam Jalal-ud-Din Suyuti Rahmatullahi 'alayh has said, or what the claimant states has been said, which is contestable as to it's authenticity throughout the period of time, and changing factions, who have deliberatlely altered what the Imams have said, in order to fool the Muslims at large.

May Allah the Almighty accept the supplications of the Beloved Messenger Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam in relation to the Great Hadrat Amir-e-Mu'awiyyah Radi Allahu anhu, and may He make this peace of effort, a guiding light for us all in this world, and the Herafter.
