Giarhwih Sharif
The anniversary of returning of Gaus-al-Azam (Radi Allahu anhu) unto Him is observed on 11th of Rabi-al-Thani each year and is called Giarhwih Sharif.
The celebration of Giarhwih Sharif has been observed by Great Awliya and Ulema for many hundreds of years. Giarhwih Sharif is specifically an Essale -e Sawaab for Ghos-al- Azam (Radi Allahu anhu). It is also celebrated on the 11th of every islamic month in many mosques and homes. This auspicious function takes place both nationally and internationally endowing great spiritual benefits and barakaat.
The devotees of the Great Saint hold public meetings, where Ullema pay tributes and shed light on the life and work of the Great Ghous (Radi Allahu anhu). The Mahafil –e-Quran Khawani (gatherings for the recitation of the Glorious Quran) are held, general feasts are hosted. And friends and relations, near and dear ones, rich and poor are offered food specially cooked for the occasion. All such majalis (public meetings) mahafils, (gatherings) and feasts are observed throughout the month of Rabi-al-Thani.
Gharhwih Sharif is a manifestation of love, regard and respect to wards Mahboob-e- Subhani (Beloved of Allah) Kings of Pir’s Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi Allahu anhu).
It has also been a routine of all saints and scholars to observe Giarwih Sharif, regularly and with full sanctity. It is in fact a great blessing from Almighty Allah on Aulia Mohiyuddin Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi Allahu anhu) that countless people acknowledge the selfless, and dedicated services rendered by him for the well being of mankind. It is the loving kindness of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) that He showers His mercy on the persons paying tribute to His Beloved, Mehboob-e Subhani (Radi Allahu anhu). It is the endless generosity of Almighty Allah that he grants their Prayers. Since the feeding of the poor had become a great routine of the life of Ghous –al- Azam (Radi Allahu anhu), laid down of feeding the poor, by the Great Saint, is revived by his devotees, faithful and descendents who follow the tradition with full dignity and sanctity. in memory of Mehboob –e-Subhani, Ghous-ul-Azam Dastigir, Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi Allahu anhu). Giarwih Sharif is specifically an Essale –Sawab for Sayidina Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. (Radi Allahu anhu) .
The Hadith and the verses of the Glorious Quran as well as many other, suggest Dua, and Essale Sawaab for those Muslims who came before us is a highly commendable act. This action of making Dua is also an essence of the Giarhwih Sharif. Although the event pertains the great saint all Muslims are remembered in the Dua’s for Essale sawaab.
During the Giarwih Sharif, the sultan and the pious elders congregate at the Mazaar Sharif (blessed tomb) of Sayyiduna Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi Allahu anhu) in Baghdad Sharif. They recite the Khatam sharif from ASR Salaat till Maghrib Salaat and also recite the praises of the Great Saint. After the Maghrib Salaat, the spiritual Head sits in the middle of the congregation and leads the Zikhr. On this occasion many people experience a sense of Wajd (spiritual ecstasy). This is followed by distribution of sweets prepared for the function.
Ghous -Al -Azam (Radi Allahu anhu) was a man of great courage and determination. He was obeying directions from Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) and Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) and had Aap (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) Blessings with him.

This month Rabi ul Thani is the birth month of Hazrat Gauze Azam Radi Allahu anhu so Mubarak to all sisters.
In my household we celebrate giyareveeh shareef I attend mehfils every month (11th of every month) we have food and read the quran,darood shareef and naaths.
In time of need I remember gaus Pak Radi Allahu anhu and my problems are resolved alhamdullilah. My ambition/desire is one day with the grace of Allah Taalah visit the tomb of Gause pak Radi Allahu anhu in Baghdad Shareef in Iraq but with the problems in Iraq it is too risky to go But Inshallah one day I shall go

Mashallah I went to a giyarrwih sharif niyaz only yesterday. We believe in giyarrwih sharif alot and my parents do niyyaz every month as well. I would like to read more stories on ghous pak please, if any sisters can help.

Alhamdolillah, a fantastic thread. I too would love to visit the shrine of Ghous al-Azam one day. We have a picture in our living room of his blessed Jali Mubarak and it is beautiful.
When in difficulty, I too often speak his name. Did you know, he is referred to as the 'Greatest Helper', hence Ghuas al-Azam.

A Truthful Boy
Long ago there lived a youth who was fond of reading and writing. Unfortunately, there was no large school of learning where he lived. His father had died and the boy lived with his mother. One day he asked his mother if he could travel to Baghdad (Iraq) and seek knowledge there. Baghdad was a very big city. There were many famous schools and colleges where great saints and people who were very close to Allah stayed. The youth said to his mother, "My dear mother, let me learn as much as possible about Deen and Islam, because an unread person is called ignorant and useless. He is not respected. He is like a blind person who does not know what is happening in the world around and in the life hereafter. Ignorance is death on earth and leads to gloom and despair. To know many things brings light into a person's life. A knowledgeable person is well known and well liked amongst those who are Allah's chosen Ones. Without knowledge, one doesn't even know how to pray."
The mother was a good lady. She worshipped Allah day and night. Recitation of the glorious Qur'aan was her hobby. She was delighted to hear that her son wished for learning. She thanked Allah that her son had no bad habits.
This pious lady had only managed to save forty Ashrafis (gold coins), but these she gladly gave to her son. She prepared some food for him to eat during the journey and sewed the money into the lining of his coat under the armpit, thus hiding it away. When everything was ready, she said to her son, "I must tell you one thing. Listen to it carefully, remember it and never fail to practise it. Whenever you speak, speak only the truth. Remember that in truth lies salvation. You can save yourself from great worry by telling the truth. Truth will save your life."
In those days there were no motors, buses, trains and the only means of travel was by camel, horse or on foot. It was often very dangerous because travellers were usually attacked by robbers. So they travelled together in large groups called caravans.
Luckily, there was a caravan going to Baghdad. The youth went with them. They travelled for some time until one day a band of robbers came down from the hills. The robbers began to steal all they could. One of the robbers took everything away from the youth and asked him roughly if he had anything else. The boy calmly answered, 'Yes, I have forty Ashrafis." The robber said, "You must be joking!" The youth replied, "No, I am not." Indeed had his mother not told him to speak the truth! The robber stared at him as the boy carried on speaking, "I am travelling for a good cause. Those who go out to look for learning are walking towards Heaven. The angels will help them on their journey. I am going to be a learned man. I am a descendent of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). Telling lies does not befit me. What are forty Ashrafis that I should tell a lie in order to keep them? Not even if I was to be killed would I do this. A Muslim does not tell a lie but speaks the truth even in the face of fear and danger."
While the youth was talking, another robber came up to him. He pushed him and said, "What have you got?" The boy replied, "Forty Ashrafis." This prompt reply made the robber stop and think. Everyone seemed to be lost in amazement or terror - stricken except the boy, who remained completely unmoved. Indeed he must not be joking. Puzzled the robber took him to their leader.
"What is your name and town?" The leader asked. "My name is 'Abdul Qaadir and I come from Jaylaan", the boy said. "And where are you going?" "Baghdad." "What will you do in Baghdad?" "I am going to be educated." "Well, well! Have you any money?" "Yes sir, I have forty Ashrafis. Haven't I already said so?" "Where are they?" enquired the leader. He looked closely at the boy.
"Here under my armpit", the boy answered as he pointed to the lining in his sleeve. "My mother sewed them inside my coat." The leader laughed, "You must be very simple. You don't tell people such things." "Muslims don't tell lies", the youth replied. The leader raised his eyebrows. "The boy is not so simple after all", he thought. "What great faith in Islam has this young lad! Without it he would not have told the truth. We make our children into clever liars. We tell lies ourselves day and night and hide the truth, thereby causing harm to Allah's Creation. This life is not worth living. This boy knows more of Allah's Wisdom than 1, a grown man."
He bent his head in shame. Tears rolled down his cheeks. He stood up, embraced the youth and asked his forgiveness.
Greatly surprised, the youth exclaimed, "Pray to Allah for forgiveness, for he expects His Creatures to ask Him Alone for His Mercy."
There, before him, the leader and his companions repented for all their sins and promised to live the lives of noble people, their first good action being that of returning all the stolen loot to the travellers, to the best of their ability.
Sayyid 'Abdul Qadir Jilani (Rehmatullahi ’Alaih) (d. 1166 AD/561 H) grew up to be a pious man and one of the greatest figures of Islamic mysticism. He was also a great jurist and educationalist. He was well known as 'Muhyuddeen', the reviver of Islam. He is given the title 'Ghauth-al-A'zam (the greatest helper).

Pray everyday for your days to be full of baarkat!

Here is my contribution I hope this helps to further our knowledge not only in the life of One of the Greatest Saints, but also throw light in to the right Path.
This is taken from An excerpt from Ghaus -ul- Azam Dastagir [i](Radi Allahu anhu) by Abdul aziz Urfi, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan and high Court Of Sindh.[/i]
The period of preaching by Ghous-al-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi Allahu anhu) is of considerable importance. It is spread over more than forty years and more of his precious life.
It started in 521 A.H. and continued till 561 A.H. He devoted himself wholly as a teacher. There were good reasons for it. In the first instance he was an educationist, a keen lover of knowledge and a staunch suppoertor of mass literacy. This is eveident from his sermons. Secondly, being very modest by nature, he always refrained from projecting himself in the limelight. Thirdly, Baghdad in those days was highly developed in the art of oratory and there were many recognised and celebrated Arab orators who by their command of language and the gift of making stirring speeches, had become very popular amongst all selections of people.
Fourthly, with him being a native of non-Arabic speaking land, he was at a disadvantage when compared to the Arabs, in the field of oratory for which eloquence and fluency of speech were profound value and importanc. In spite of these disadvantages, he was able to acquire, due to his courage, apitude and profiency in the art of oratory.
Ultimately he became a great orator and preacher of his time. He earned fame in this field in the same way as he had won recognition of his talents as a scholar and a teacher.
It is narrated that on the 16th Shawwal 521 AH, he was blessed with the Ziyyarat ( Vision) of Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam); who questioned him, " why do you not preach?" He humbly submitted: " I am a Ajami. and I do not have enough command of the Arabic language to enable me to deliever public speeches". Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad Mustufa (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) blessed him by reciting on him 7 times the following verse: " Call unto the way of Thy Lord with wisdom and fair extortion, and reason with them in the better way"
Ghous- Al- Azam (Radi Allahu anhu), thus blessed and directed by Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam), finished his prayers, and mounted the Mimber (pulpit) of the Mosque.
He delivered his maiden speech before the congregation on one of the religious injunctions. There were not many people in the audience because up to that time he was known only as a teacher and nobody knew him as a orator or a reformer. Small audiences and lack of interest shown by the people in his early speeches, did not bring about any discouragment to him. He was a man fo great courage and determanation.
He knew that he was obeying the directions of Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad Mustufa (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) and His blessings were with him.
The learned authors of Qalaidul Jawahir and Safinatul Awliya have mentioned that he was also directed and BLESSED BY HIS GREAT-GRAND FATHER, hADRAT ALI IBN ABU TALIB (Radi Allahu anhu) to deliver sermons. He never suffered from lack of confidence. His lack of fluency Arabic, or in the art of oratory, were no longer problems to deter him. He used to deliever sermons with the confidence that whatever words would come oput of his mouth, would be inspirations from Almighty Allah.

It was the result of his complete dedication to duty and unshakeable belief in Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) that within a short span of time, his fame as an orator spread throughout the length and breadth of the Muslim world. His sermons became so popular that people would come in droves from far places to listen to his sermons. The mosque where he delivered his sermons fell short of accomodation. Therefore, on request of the public, he shifted the venue to Jamia- masjid which was the biggest mosque of Baghdad in those days. Later on, this mosque also could not also accommodate the people, therefore they carried his Mimber (pulpit) to Eid Gaah ( an open space where Eid prayers are held). Later, the increasing swell of his audience obliged him to set apart three days of the week to deliver Khutbas; The fridays and Mondays in his Jamia (University) and sundays in his Khanqah ( monastery), which was being maintained and run under his direct supervision. Among his audience there were people from every walk of life; people of different faiths, of different views and status. there used to be Asfia, Fuqaha ( jurists), Ulama (Scholars) of hight repute, Mashaikh, muslims and non-Muslims, commoners, ministers, and even rivals. It was a miracle of His words, of his way of speaking and of his manner of expressing ideas that at the end of each Khutba. there used to be a long line of people coming forward for bayt atHis hands, and thereby giving up their past ways of sinful living. Many non-Muslims, notably the jews and Christians, came forward to embrace Islam at His hand.
Ghous- Al- Azam was not heavily built but slim. The resolute hard life, long hours of meditation and ceaseless struggle against Nafs (self), had made him wiry. He was of meduim height, neither short nor tall. He had a full grown beard, and his countenance sparkled with Noor (Spiritual Glow)- the natural effect of his night -long prayers..
His voice was louder and greater penetrating than could be imagined from a man of his constitition. At about the time of delivering sermons, he was audiable to thousands of people sitting around him. There were approximately seventy thousand people attending his sermons and some of them had come from places as far as Syria, Yemen and Egypt. There Used to be several Hundred people, ready with their pens to write each and every word spoken by him.

I too believe in Ghous Pak tremendously and they have helped me so much in my life, through their dua's. Jazakallah for the link as well, now I will look at the roza and ask for my dua's to be fulfilled.

Indeed, Sr. Ashiqe Rasools post gave an insight into Ghaus al-Azam's amazing adulthood. A most fascinating read.
Here's another short story:
The Thief Who Became A Saint
In Baghdad in the twelfth century there lived a pious saint who was the most famous in the whole Islamic world and all the other saints accepted him as their spiritual leader and bowed down their necks before his feet. His name was Shaykh ‘Abd al Qadir al Jilani and he was known as the Ghawth al Azam (the Greatest Helper) and the Qutb al Aqtâb (‘the Pole of the spiritual Poles’ i.e. he who is at the apex of the spiritual hierarchy of saints).
One night, a notorious thief entered the house of Shaykh Abd al Qadir Jilani and tried to steal something. However, the Shaykh’s servant was awake and captured the man. The thief was terrified of what would become of him for trying to rob the house of such a pious and respected saint of Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) and asked for forgiveness. The servant was very cross and held him tightly. Presently, hearing the commotion, the Shaykh –who was in his little room engaged in his nightly vigils and worship—came to the scene and asked what was the matter. The servant explained what had happened and the Shaykh approached the thief and said, “Young man! You have come to the house of ‘Abd al Qadir al Jilani to steal something. Yet, if you go away with nothing people will think that you returned from my house empty-handed! I am from that family which never sends away anybody empty-handed! I am from the family of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam). It has been revealed to me by inspiration by Allah that one of the Poles (qutb) has just passed away tonight. Go! I make you into a Pole so that you may replace him who has passed away!”
Thus the thief entered the house of the Shaykh a robber and a criminal and left as one of the chief saints! Know from this the closeness of the Sultan of the Shaykhs to Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) and the power he has been granted to help!

THE SPOUTED JUG TURNED TOWARDS THE QIBLA
Once a group of the great saints of Jilan Shareef visited the grand blessed presence of Huzoor Sayyed-e-na Ghous-e-Azam (Radi Allahu anhu), they found the pot shareef of His not in the direction of Qibla (so they drew His attention towards it, hence) He looked at his servant wrathfully. He could not tolerate the wrath and fell down and trembled to death. Now He looked at the pot, it itself turned towards the Qibla. (Bahjaa-tul-Asraar)
For the sake of Allah! Give the ointment of dust which touched your feet. My liver is injured and heart is wounded 'O, Ghouse.

KEEP THE POT FACING TOWARDS THE QIBLA
'O, The livers of the King of the Baghdad! It is a fact that the upper most degree of love is that we open heartedly adopt each and every motion of our loved one. Therefore, if possible always keep the pot's spout facing the Qibla, Huzoor Muhaddis-e-Azam (Radi Allahu anhu) (the Greatest scholar of tradition of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) of Pakistan Hazrat-e-Maulana Sardar Ahmed Sahib (Radi Allahu anhu) apart from the pot used to also keep his shoes facing the Qibla. Thanks to Allah Sagh-e-Madeenah as far as possible follows the ways of these two saints by keeping the pot and shoes facing the Qibla. But in fact, the desire of Sagh-e-Madeenah is that every thing remains facing the Qibla. (Bahjaa-tul-Asraaq)

Subhan Allah! Alahumdolillah! The stories are fantastic, keep them coming in a pleasure to read and appreciate the magnificence of the Great Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani (Radi Allahu anhu) in this Most blessed month, a very big Highlight for Ahl- e- Sunnah followers all over the world.
The personality of Hadrat Ghous-ul-Azam (Radi Allahu anhu)is of unquestioned greatness, as in his life time and after his passing away, his claims to supremacy have rested upon a sure and firm foundation.
He never spoke a lie!. He was essentially a practical man, who practiced what he preached. He led a life wedded to rigours and asceticism. He was a man of marvelous self- control.
For forty long years, he offered the morning prayer without break or pause, with the ablutions of the night prayer.
For fifteen years, it was his daily practice to stand on one foot in the night, and recite the Glorious Qur'an, and finish it by the break of day.
Once, it happened, that, he should postpone his prayers in the night, Ghous ul Azam (Radi Allahu anhu) would not prefer rest to prayers. He stopped there, and then, on the steps and stood on one foot, thus standing he began to recite the Glorious Qur'an. He did not move on, until he had finished all the thirty parts of the Glorious Qur'an.
He saw divine beauty in men, women and children, who were destitute, disabled and deformed.
There is a consensus of opinion, that Hadrat Ghous ul Azam (Radi Allahu anhu) was the most outstanding figure of his time

According to the two Qur'an-memorizers [hafizan], adh-Dhahabi and Ibn Rajab, Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir's father was Abu Salih 'Abdu'llah, the son of Jangi Dost. Allah knows best! The name Jangi Dost is a Persian expression, meaning "he who loves fighting." Anyway, Allah (Glory be to Him and Exalted is He) is indeed the One who knows best! His mother was Umm al-Khair [Mother of Goodness] Amat al-Jabbar [Maidservant of the All-Compelling One] Fatima, the daughter of Shaikh 'Abdu'llah as-Sawma'i al-Husaini az-Zahid. She had an abundant share of goodness and righteousness. It is related of her that she used to say: "When I gave birth to my son, 'Abd al-Qadir, he would not suck my breast during the daytime of Ramadan. The new moon of Ramadan was hidden by clouds, so people came and asked me about him, and I told them: 'He has not sipped a breast today.' It thus became obvious that the day was the first of Ramadan." The word then spread throughout the towns of Jilan, that a son had been born to the nobles, and that this was a child who refused to be suckled during the daytime in Ramadan. It was also said that his mother had become pregnant with him when she was sixty years of age. It is said that no woman of sixty carries a child, unless she be a woman of Quraish, and no woman of fifty carries a child, unless she be an Arab woman. When she gave birth to him (may Allah be well pleased with him), he was received by the hand of gracious favor, and he was surrounded by enabling guidance, behind him and in front of him. He never ceased to be nurtured (may Allah be well pleased with him) in the lap of noble kindness, nourished with the milk of blessings, guarded in safekeeping, watched over with providential care.
