Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
I have a dillema and I would like your opnions on it.
Islam teaches us not to lie. Lying is a major sin yes! right we know so many people tell little white lies, about sicknotes, etc... What about the big lies, When we have to hold the quran and testyfy and tell the truth. But do we, how many have lied, to bring their relatives over, how many have lied to cover ones crime, and how many have given a family member a false alibi. The Quran is the word of Allah yet we testyfy and swear on his Book and name in courts all over the country over crimes big and small. How do you define a small lie to a big lie? A lie is a lie, and when holding the quran and lying that is a big major sin. I want your views on this subject as I am in a long debate with a relative from pakistan who says its not a big issue. Doyu know where i'm gettng at
Edited Reason The word Holy is a christian term

I understand what your saying sister. We have all been in a situation where we say things to give ourselves a better and advantageous position. But why do we do it ? Because its an easy option, we save face and its convenient for us, and were used to it. If we read any statement as a piece of text, as opposed to it being spoken, when the situation and its dangers are clearly highlighted, then its as clear as the midday sun. Because had you not written what you had in that way, we can see that it is wrong and ghunah, but if 2 people were in a situation they probably wouldnt think twice.
Yes, most of us lie, tell little white lies, that we have got so used to telling, whether its the repair man, the insurance company, the high street shop or our neighbour. These are all lies, whether its small or big a lie is still a lie. Hope this makes sense.

I don't think you can say that lying isn't a big issue.
There are plenty of Hadith showing the seriousness of lying.
Here are just a couple :
Malik related to me that he heard that Abdullah ibn Masud used to say, "You must tell the truth. Truthfulness leads to right action. Right action leads to the Garden. Beware of lying. Lying leads to corruption, and corruption leads to the Fire. Don't you see that it is said, 'He speaks the truth and acts rightly,' and, 'He lies and is corrupt.' "
Imam Maliks Muwatta Book 56, Number 56.7.16
'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Truth leads one to Paradise and virtue leads one to Paradise and the person tells the truth until he is recorded as truthful, and lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell, and the person tells a lie until he is recorded as a liar.
Sahih Muslim Book 32, Number 6307
I hope this illustrates how serious lying is whether it be big or small. And as for swearing by the Quran then in my eye's that is huge.
I'm not trying to say we're all perfect in fact we are all far from it. We're probably all guilty of lying but to say it's not a big deal is wrong in my eyes.

ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam Well said brother Muhammad Suhayb. Lying is wrong and a sin and as to lying while under oath and holding The Glorious Quran is a very big sin. Do you mean in the courts sister Nudrat where they make you hold the Glorious Quran, (if your a Muslim) and a Bible if your (Christian)? That is why they make us hold the Glorious Quran so we don't lie . We might cover up in the courts and testify and lie and get away with it, but we wont in the eyes of Almighty Allah and will have to answer for the lie and for taking a false oath. I know a lot of people who over small things make each other hold the Quran and swear to tell the truth which , I also think is very wrong to make someone do that and use the Glorious Quran as an excuse to get out of things, sometimes very silly trivial things. The Glorious Quran is the Most Sacred Book in the world and the Words of Almighty Allah, we must respect and honour it , not abuse it in such a way and mimic it, because if we lie while holding it and swear upon it to tell the truth, we are ridiculing it and have no value for it, That to me is an insult to the Glorious Quran and will have to answer on the day of judgment for that.

Mashallah a great thread and some excellent replies.
I am against using the most important book in our lives to swear upon certain in most cases petty arguments. I have seen it and heard it people swearing by the name of the Quran and they do it so casually as well .
Then on the other hand I have met people who refuse to take any oath in court whether it is the Quran or Bible, also when you become a British National you have to take oath many people have refused.
Lying is a sin whether minor or major some excellent hadith's given may we all stay on the path of Truth and use/respect the Quran for the purpose it was sent down for ameen summa ameen.

Assalaam Alaikum
I know us people dont hesitate to swear on the Quran e kareen at times(although its wrong),but in the past i have seen a Hadith Shareef which states "Do not swear on the Quran even if you are telling the TRUTH"(these are probably not the exact words of hadith).
Imagine what lying on it entails then?
Maybe someone would be kind enough to find the above Hadith.
Allah forgive for any mistakes.

and then there are those who have no choice but to swear on the Bible or Quran, for Legal Reason in court in Uk you have to do this. Actually dear sister one does not have to touch any holy book in court and nor can they force you to. One can choose to "Affirm" instead, which means saying a sort of different oath(but its still haraam to lie on this too).

Qassam i hate it when people say qassam so and so this or Qassam so and so that. Does this mean they lie at other times when they have to say qassam like their life depended on it.
It just makes people out to be desperate and dodgy in my eyes.

A lot of people say it without even realising it cause they are so use to it so if we know people who pick a Qassum every sentence we should try to correct them on this

Listen is it wrong 2 lie upon the Quran to make some1 happy when you know that lying will hurt the person? And does lying upon the Quran (jhuti quran ki qasam khana) kill a person?
