Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa SallamMANNERISM OF THE SAHABA - PART ONE HELPING THE POOR The Sahaba RadiAllahu anhuma were very kind to the poor and needy people. Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) never ate food without feeding a poor along with himself. Whenever the dining mat was laid for him and by chance any distinguished person passed by, his family used to request him to join in food. Sayyiduna Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) never invited any well-to-do person to eat with him. But whenever he saw a poor man passing by his door, he used to request him to join. He used to say: My family calls a person to food who has no want of food and neglect a person who wants food. Once, Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) wished to eat fish. His wife Safiyah (radi Allahu anha) prepared the dish with utmost care. The dining mat was just laid when they heard the call of a beggar. He directed his wife to give the dish to the beggar. Sayyidah Safiyah (radi Allahu anha) hesitated a little but he kept on insisting her to give the dish to the beggar. Finally, they donated one Dinar to the beggar to purchase food for himself. On one ocassion, people admonished the wife of Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) for not serving her husband in a proper way. She asked what else she could do to please him. She said: Whenever I prepare a special dish for him, he requests a beggar to join him in food. The beggars knew his habit and sat along his route he passed by. His wife requested the beggars not to sit along the way of her husband. When Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) came out of the Mosque after performing the prayer, he sent for the beggars from their dwelling places. They did not turn up as Sayyiduna Abdullahs (radi Allahu anhu) wife had instructed them not to respond to the call of her husband. Sayyiduna Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) got so much upset that he did not take his food that evening. Sayyiduna Haritha Bin Noman (radi Allahu anhu) lost his eyesight. He tied a thread from his worship mat up to the door. Whenever he heard the call of a beggar, he picked up some dates from the basket and came to the door with the help of the thread and gave the dates to the beggar. Members of his family said: We can do this on your behalf. He said the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has said serving food to a poor protects man from falling into a bad place (i.e. Hell). One day Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) observed fast and had nothing at home except one bread. In the meantime a beggar gave a call. She asked her maidservant to give that bread to the beggar. The maid said: How will you break your fast? Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) said: First you give the bread to the beggar. In the evening somebody sent to her a dish of mutton. She called up the maid and said: Eat this as it is better than your bread. to be continued..InshaAllah Azwajal

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
SELF-RESPECT
The Sahaba radiAllah anhuma, despite their poor conditions, never stretched their hand for help in front of anyone.
Once some Sahaba called on the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and performed the Baiat (pledge of allegiance). One of the conditions of the pledge was: Never beg anything from anyone. The Sahaba#ranhum# implemented this directive to the extent that if they accidentally dropped their whip on the ground, they never begged anyone to pick it up for them.
If Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) dropped the bridle of his she-camel while mounting it, he made the shecamel sit and picked the rein himself. People said: Why didnt you order us to pick it? He said: My beloved Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has said, Dont beg anything from anyone.
Once, the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: I guarantee Paradise for him who guarantees that he would not beg anything from anyone. Sayyiduna Thuban (radi Allahu anhu) said: I guarantee this. From that day onwards, Sayyiduna Thuban (radi Allahu anhu) did not beg anything from anyone.
On one ocassion,[/b] Sayyiduna Hakeem Bin Hezam (radi Allahu anhu) begged something from Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) who satisfied his demand. He again begged something, which he again provided. Then he said to him: O Hakeem (radi Allahu anhu)! Worldly things are very sweet and colourful. He who takes these things whole-heartedly, gets abundance and he who takes these things with temptation, does not get abundance and becomes like a man who eats but does not get satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand.[/b]
Sayyiduna Hakeem Bin Hezam (radi Allahu anhu) took a pledge never to beg anything from anyone. He observed this pledge so religiously that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) used to call him up for giving gifts but he always refused to accept his offer. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu), during his tenure as Caliph, tried to offer him gifts but he rejected his offer too. Finally, Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) said: O Believers! Be my witness that I offer to Hakeem (radi Allahu anhu) his due but he does not accept it.
Sayyiduna Maalik bin Sanan (radi Allahu anhu) considered begging such a shameful act that he preferred to remain hungry for three days but did not beg food from anyone. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) came to know this and said: He who wants to see a man of self-respect, should see Maalik Bin Sanan (radi Allahu anhu).
People of Suffah, though they were wholly dependent on others, never stretched their hands in front of anyone. That is why Allah Ta'ala has appreciated their merits in the Holy Quraan: The unthinking man accounted them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shall know them by their mark: they do not beg of men with importunity. (2:273).
The Sahaba even did not beg anything from their parents. Sayyidah Fatima (radi Allahu anha) was over burdened with her domestic chores. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had received some slaves as the booty of a Battle. Sayyidah Fatima (radi Allahu anha) called on the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) to beg a slave for her service but she saw her father in conversation with some people. She felt shy and returned home.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) was among the People of Suffah. His life was that of poverty and starvation. Due to hunger, he used to lie on the ground on his belly. Sometimes he ties a stone on his stomach to avoid the pains of hunger, but never stretched hand in front of anyone. One day he sat along a busy street. When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) passed, he asked him about a certain verse of the Holy Quraan. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) did not respond and passed by. Then Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) arrived there and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) repeated the same question to him. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) also overlooked him. In fact Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) wanted to divert their attention towards his pathetic condition so that either of them could take him home for food.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
SELFLESSNESS
Self-sacrifice is the best kind of generosity. The Sahaba embodied this merit in the highest degree. Whenever the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) offered some gifts to Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu), he refused to accept saying: Please give these to someone else who needs them more than me.
Once, a hungry man called on the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) who had nothing except water in his house. He Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam said: Who will play a host to this gentleman tonight? Sayyiduna Abu Talha Ansaari (radi Allahu anhu) volunteered himself and brought him home. He asked his wife if there was something to eat. She said: I have a little food for children. He said: Divert the attention of children to something else. When I bring the guest at home, put off the lamp. We shall pretend as if we are sharing food with him. Next morning when Sayyiduna Abu Talha (radi Allahu anhu) called on the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), He Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam said: Allah is pleased with your behaviour last night and revealed this verse: But prefer (the refugees) above themselves though poverty becomes their lot. And whoso is saved from his own avarice such are they who are successful. (59:9)
Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) had reserved the place for her grave between the graves of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddique (radi Allahu anhu) but when Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) requested her to give him that place for his burial; she happily withdrew her claim in his favour saying: I had kept that place for myself but prefer you to myself and surrender it to you.
During a Battle, Sayyiduna Akramah (radi Allahu anhu), Sayyiduna Harith Bin Hisham (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Suhail Bin Amr (radi Allahu anhu) fell on the ground wounded. Sayyiduna Akramah (radi Allahu anhu) asked for some water but when the water brought, he saw that Sayyiduna Suhail (radi Allahu anhu) was staring at it. He said: Give it to Suhail first. When the water was brought to Sayyiduna Suhail (radi Allahu anhu), he saw that Sayyiduna Harith (radi Allahu anhu) was staring at it. He said: Give it to Harith first. As a result of this none of them could drink the water and laid down their life in want of water.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa SallamMANNERISM OF THE SAHABA - PART TWO GENEROSITY Islam got its roots with the overall of the Sahaba but it was their generosity that rendered more stability to Islam. Madinatul Munawwara was a strange place for the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) but the generosity of the Ansaar (the local inhabitants) made Madinatul Munawwara the City of the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). The Ansaar offered their homes to those who migrated along with the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and also made them partners in their farm produce. Sayyiduna Sa'd Bin Al-Rabi (radi Allahu anhu) offered to Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan Bun Awf (radi Allahu anhu) one of his wives along with his property but Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan (radi Allahu anhu) refused with thanks. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) asked the Ansaar to give land for the House of Allah Ta'ala and wished to give them its price, but their generosity demanded something else. They said: We want the price of our land from Allah Ta'ala alone. "Umri" is a kind of gift in Islam under which a person offers a gift to the other person for the lifetime. When the immigrants arrived in Madinatul Munawwara, the local inhabitants, called the Ansaar, offered them their properties as lifetime gift. But the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) prevented them to do so. Among the Ansaar, Sayyiduna Sa'd Bin Ubadah (radi Allahu anhu) was one of the most generous man. Every day his man gave a call from the rooftop of his castle: Whoever wishes meat and fat, can come over here and take it. When the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) arrived in Madinatul Munawwara, Sayyiduna Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) sent him food. The sustenance of the People of Suffah mainly depended on his generosity. Ever evening, other Sahaba used to feed two or three persons from among the People of Suffah, but Sayyiduna Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) fed over eighty persons every day. Sayyiduna Jafar Bin Abi Talib (radi Allahu anhu) was also very generous to the People of Suffah as he loved poor people. He likes to live with them like one of them. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) was also a member of the Suffah group. He reports: I used to ask the Sahaba about the verses of the Quraan, which I knew better than them. My only objective was that somebody should take me home and feed me. Sayyiduna Jaafar Bin Abi Taalib (radi Allahu anhu) also took me home and feed me till my utmost satisfaction then answered my queries about the Holy Quraan. Among the Muhajireen, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) migrated to Madinatul Munawwara along with the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). Before leaving Makkatul Mukarrama, he took with him his wealth worth five to six thousand Dinars, to spend for the welfare of his Muslim brethren. After Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) left for Madinatul Munawwara, his father Abu Quhafah said to the family: He has gone leaving us misers. But Sayyidah Asma (radi Allahu anhu) collected some stones and kept these in a bag. She said to Abu Quhafah, who was a blind man: Feel that bag. Abu Bakr has left behind his entire wealth. Among the Muhajireen, Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was the richest and equally a generous person. When the number of Muslims increased during the lifetime of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), he wanted to expand the Mosque. There was a piece of land adjacent to the Mosque for which the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had asked: Who is going to purchase this land and offers it to Allah? Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) purchased that land with 20 thousand Dirhams and gifted it to the Mosque. Muslims had a scarcity of water. Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) bought the Well of Roma and donated it to the Muslims. During the Battle of Tabuk, the Muslims were facing a highly developed and wealthy enemy and the Sahaba possessed less equipment of Jihad. Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) alone provided the Muslims with the necessary logistic support to the Muslim forces. Sayyiduna Qays Bin Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) was a very generous and brave companion of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). During the battles he held the flag of the Ansaar. During a Battle, he borrowed money to feed the Muslim army. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) were also present in this expedition. They wanted to prevent Sayyiduna Qays (radi Allahu anhu) from spending out the entire wealth of his father. Sayyiduna Sa'd (radi Allahu anhu) called on Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and complained: Who will save me from the sons of Quhafah and Khattab. They want to make my son a miser. Sayyiduna Adi (radi Allahu anhu) was the son of famous generous person, Hatim Tai. Once a person demanded from him one hundred Dirhams. He said: You are asking only one hundred Dirhams from the son of Hatim. By Allah, I shall not give. Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) was such a generous lady that she donated everything that she possessed. Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Zubair (radi Allahu anhu) wanted to prevent her from doing so. She became annoyed with him and stopped speaking with him. Sayyidah Asma's (radi Allahu anha) generosity was also of the same calibre. But there was a difference in the modus operandi of both the sisters. Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) used to accumulate wealth and after collecting a considerable, she used to donate it to the needy. Sayyidah Asma (radi Allahu anha), on the other hand, never left anything for the next day and whatever she got; she spent it on that day itself. On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Munkader Bin Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) called on Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anhu). She asked him: Do you have a son? He replied in the negative. She said: If I had ten thousand Dirhams, I would have given them to you. Sayyiduna Ameer Mua'wiyyah (radi Allahu anhu) sent her some money that very evening. She exclaimed: How, in a hurry I have been put to the test? She sent ten thousand Dirhams to Sayyiduna Munkader (radi Allahu anhu) who purchased a slave girl. The slave girl bore him many children. Sayyiduna Saeed Bin A'as (radi Allahu anhu) was also a very generous person. If he possessed nothing at the time when somebody begged him, he used to write a promissory note to the beggar. He used to assemble his brethren every Friday, feed them, give them five dresses and sent gifts to their houses. He was the Governor of Kufa. On every Thursday, he used to send his slave with guineas to the Kufa Mosque to keep the guineas in front of the persons performing the Salaah. It was because of this that the Kufa Mosque was overcrowded every Thursday. He owed eighty thousand guineas to various moneylenders. His son asked the reason for such a magnanimous debt. He replied: I helped some gentleman, gave money to some other before he started begging. Hence, I owe the money-lenders this magnanimous debt. One day, Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) received more than twenty thousand Dirhams which he distributed then and there among the people who were present there. When one person was left out without getting a share of the money, Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) borrowed some money from someone amongst the group and gave it to that person. He was in the habit of fasting regularly but he used to break his fast whenever he received a guest. The mat on which he served food used to become so crowded sometimes, that people had to eat while standing. Once he desired to eat fish. When the dish was served to him, he heard the call of a beggar. He at once gave the entire food to the beggar. Once he fell ill. People purchased five grapes for one Dirham. A beggar passed by and he wanted to give the beggar those grapes. People said that they would give him his share. But he did not agree. Finally, people gave those grapes to the beggar and later bought back from him. to be continued..InshaAllah Azwajal

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa SallamMANNERISM OF THE SAHABA - PART TWO FORBEARANCE The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said: The person whom Allah saves from the evils of two things tongue and the genital parts will enter the Paradise. The Sahaba abstained from backbiting, abuses, criticism, sarcasm and useless talks. Sayyiduna Harith Bin Hisham (radi Allahu anhu) was a man of few words. Once he requested the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) to teach him something, which he could do regularly. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) pointed at the tongue and said: Control it. Sayyiduna Harith (radi Allahu anhu) already spoke very less. He said: This is very easy for me. He reports: But when I tried to control my tongue, it appeared to be a very difficult task. On one occasion, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan Bin Harith (radi Allahu anhu) narrated a Hadith to Marwan (radi Allahu anhu) on the authority of Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) and Sayyidah Umm-e-Salmah (radi Allahu anha). Earlier Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) had narrated the same Hadith in a different way. Marwan (radi Allahu anhu) forced Sayyiduna Abdur Rahmaan (radi Allahu anhu) to openly contradict Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) but he refused. One day he met Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) and said to him: Had Marwan (radi Allahu anhu) not forced me, I would not have told you this Hadith. Then he narrated the Hadith on the authority of Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) and Sayyidah Umm-e-Salmah (radi Allahu anha). Once, the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) gave Sayyiduna Jaabir Bin Salim (radi Allahu anhu) some pieces of advice, which included: Dont use a bad word for anyone. He says: From that day onward I never used a bad word even against a camel or goat. On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Shaddad Bin Aws (radi Allahu anhu) was travelling. He halted at a place and said to his slave: Bring a knife, we will play with it. Since this was a worthless act, people criticized it. He said: That was the only useless thing I uttered ever since I embraced Islam, otherwise I always controlled my tongue while talking. The Sahaba felt sorry when they used any hard word unknowingly. Once Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) uttered a harsh word to Sayyiduna Rabiah bin Kaab al-Aslami (radi Allahu anhu) but later realized his mistake and said to Sayyiduna Rabiah (radi Allahu anhu): Say the same word to me to compensate my mistake. He said: I cant do that. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said: I will complain to the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). Sayyiduna Rabiah (radi Allahu anhu) again said: I will not do that. The matter was brought to the notice of the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) who said to Sayyiduna Rabiah (radi Allahu anhu): You have taken a good stand. Pray for the forgiveness in favour of Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu). Once there was a hot exchange of words between Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu). Later, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) repented and apologized to Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu). Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) refused to accept his apology. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) became very impatient and called on the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). The Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said thrice: May Allah forgive you. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) lamented on his behaviour and rushed to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) but could meet him. Then he called on Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and found him in a changed mood. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) himself feared lest the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) admonishes Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu). He knelt down before the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and said: O Allah's Apostle (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)! I have committed great atrocity. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) sometimes lost control over his tongue and he was ever repenting for that. On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) saw him pulling out his tongue. He said: May Allah forgive you. Dont pull out your tongue. He said: It is this tongue that has ruined me. to be continued..InshaAllah Azwajal

ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
COVERING THE DEFECTS OF OTHERS
The Sahaba strived hard to hide the defects of their colleagues and to highlight their virtues.
One day Sayyiduna Aqabah Bin Aamir (radi Allahu anhu) was informed by his chief record-keeper: My neighbours consume wine. I tried to prevent them but they did not abstain. I propose to call the police. Sayyiduna Aqabah (radi Allahu anhu) said: Leave them. I have heard the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) saying, The person who hides others defects is like him who saves a girl who was buried alive.
A man came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and confessed that he had committed adultery. He asked whether he had told that to anybody else. He replied in negation. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said: Repent in the Court of Allah Ta'ala and put the divine curtain over your sin. Allah Ta'ala accepts the repentance of the sinners. But the man was not satisfied and called on Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) to seek his verdict. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) also gave him the same advice.
Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) said: If I ever caught a thief, I always wished Allah Ta'ala to hide his crime.
The Sahaba were free from the feeling of vengeance. Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) and Sayyidah Zaynab (radi Allahu anha) always had some or the other differences of opinion. When Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) got blemished, the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) called in Sayyidah Zaynab (radi Allahu anha) and asked her about the moral condition of Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha). Instead of talking ill of Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha), she said: I guard my ears and eyes to the fullest extent. I know nothing about Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) except her virtuousness. Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) herself acknowledges: She was my rival but Allah Ta'ala saved her because of her goodwill.
Vengeance apart, the Sahaba even abstained from any ill-feeling against their enemies. Sayyiduna Mua'wiyyah Bin Khadeej (radi Allahu anhu) had assassinated Sayyidah Ayesha's (radi Allahu anha) brother, Sayyiduna Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu). Once, Sayyiduna Mua'wiyyah Bin Khadeej (radi Allahu anhu) was leading an expedition when Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) enquired a person about his behaviour during the battle. The person said: He had no defect. Every body praised him. If a camel died during the battle, he provided another camel. If a horse died during the fight, he made another horse available. If a slave absconded, he replaced him with another. Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) said: May Allah Ta'ala forgive me, why should I treat him my enemy only because he has killed my brother. I have heard Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) invoking Allah, O Allah! Be kind to him who is kind to my people and be cruel to him who is cruel to my people.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
CLEMENCY
The Glorious Prophet of Islam's (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) training had made the Sahaba most humble, kind-hearted and sober people.
Once a person called Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) names but he kept quiet. He again used bad words but Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) did not utter a single word. When the person repeated his abusive language third time, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) reciprocated. But the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) did not like it.
Sayyiduna Salmaan Farsi (radi Allahu anhu) was the Governor of Madayan. On one ocassion, he was walking on the road, when he got wounded with the edge of a bamboo carried by a man. Sayyiduna Salmaan Farsi (radi Allahu anhu) said to him: Death should not come to you unless you see the rule of youths. (He meant the youths would not be as tolerant as he is.)
When Sayyiduna Salmaan Farsi (radi Allahu anhu) walked on the road wearing his long garb, people said: Here comes a Kirk, here comes a Kirk. He asked what they meant. People said: They call you a toy. He said: They are not guilty. Virtue belongs to tomorrow. One day he passed by some soldiers. They saw him and mocked at him saying: Is this is the chief? A man diverted his attention towards the remark. He said: Let them say.
SELF-HONOUR
Before going to the Battlefield, Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Zubair (radi Allahu anhu) went to his mother Sayyidah Asma (radi Allahu anha) who said: My son! Never accept a condition in fear of death, which could cause you demoralization later. By Allah Ta'ala, it is better to be honourably killed by the sword of the enemy than to bear the whip of insult.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
PATIENCE
Mourning over the deceased was the national tradition of the Arab people. But the company of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had made the Sahaba very patient in the highest degree of agony.
When Sayyiduna Abu Talha (radi Allahu anhu) set out of his house one morning, his son was seriously ill who died later. His wife requested the neighbours not to reveal the death of his son on his coming back home. When he returned home in the evening, he enquired about his ailing son. She said: He is more comfortable than ever before. She served him food, which he ate happily. Then she decorated herself in best of her ornaments and came to him and they enjoyed each other. Next morning she said to him metaphorically: If anybody gives a thing to someone else on loan and demands it back later, has the former any right to hold the thing back. He said: No. She said: Then, have patience with regard to your son.
When the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) returned from the Battle of Uhud, the lady companions called on him inquiring about the well-being of their relatives. Sayyidah Hamnah bint Jahsh (radi Allahu anhu) was among them. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said to her: Hamnah! Have patience for your brother Abdullah Bin Jahsh (radi Allahu anhu). She recited "Inna Lillah" and prayer for her brothers salvation. The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Have patience for your uncle Hamza Bin Abdul Mut'talib (radi Allahu anhu). She again recited "Inna Lillah" and prayed for her uncles salvation and finally kept quiet.
When Sayyiduna Waquid (radi Allahu anhu) the son of Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) passed away, he called some Bedouins to perform the funeral rituals. He arranged a race competition for the Bedouins. Sayyiduna Nafe (radi Allahu anhu) said to him: You have just come back after burying your son and you are holding this competition. He said: Nafe (radi Allahu anhu)! The Will of Allah Ta'ala has manifested in the form of my son's death. We have to somehow reduce the after effects of the tragedy.
When Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Zubair (radi Allahu anhu) faced Hajjaj in a battlefield, his mother Sayyidah Asma (radi Allahu anha) was sick. He called on her and inquired about her condition saying: It is comfortable to die, she said. Perhaps you are longing for my death. But I shall not die unless either you achieve martyrdom and I display my patience over your death or you conquer the enemy to give comfort to my eyes. When he achieved martyrdom, Hajjaj hanged his body by the gallows. Sayyidah Asma (radi Allahu anha) visited her son peacefully and addressing Hajjaj said: Has the time not come for this rider to dismount his horse?
Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) was travelling when he heard the death of his brother Sayyiduna Qaasim Bin Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma). He recited "Inna Lillah", then keeping aside performed two Rakaah, rode his camel and recited the verse: Seek help in patience and prayer; and truly it is hard save for the humble-minded. (2:45)
When the pagans were about to kill Sayyiduna Khubaib (radi Allahu anhu), he performed two Rakaah and said: You would think that I am afraid of death, otherwise I would have lengthened my prayers. Then he recited these couplets: When I die as a Muslim, I should not bother which side my body will fall. This death is in the way of Allah Ta'ala and if He ordains, He can bestow His favours on my amputated limbs.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
BRAVERY AND COURAGE
Bravery and courage are displayed sometimes while expressing one's faith, sometimes while fighting the enemy in the battlefield and sometimes while facing the cruel and tyrant ruler. The Sahaba demonstrated their courage on all occasions.
Sayyiduna Abu Dhar Ghifari (radi Allahu anhu) is a very senior Companion of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). He embraced Islam after coming to Makkatul Mukarrama. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) directed him: Go back to your native place and inform your people about my advent. He said emotionally: By Him Who holds my life, I will proclaim the Word of Oneness of Allah Ta'ala in front of the pagans of Mecca. He was away from his people having no supporter in Makkatul Mukarrama, but he entered the Makkatul Mukarrama Mosque and proclaimed loudly: I stand witness that there is no diety but Allah Ta'ala and I stand witness that Muhammad (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) is His True Messenger. Hearing these words, the pagans attacked him and beat him up severely. Next day, he again came to the Mosque and proclaimed the Oneness of Allah Ta'ala in a louder voice. The pagans again beat him severely.
Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Masood (radi Allahu anhu) was the sixth person in the order of people embracing Islam. Prior to his conversion, no Muslim could dare to recite the verses of the Holy Quraan openly in Makkatul Mukarrama. When he embraced Islam, the Sahaba gathered and said: The Quraish have not so far heard the Holy Quraan. Who among us can dare to recite the Quraan openly? Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Masood (radi Allahu anhu) said: I will recite. The Sahaba said: We are concerned about your life. We want a person who has the backing of a tribe, which could fight for him in case the pagans attack him. He said: Let me go. Allah Ta'ala will defend.
He got up and came to the Mosque at noon. The Quraish were having their assembly in the Mosque. He went straight to the Maqaam-e-Ibraheem and recited loudly: In the Name of Allah, The Most Benevolent, the Merciful. The Beneficent has made known the Quraan. The pagans heard him and when they made out that he recited the verse of the Holy Quraan, they attacked him and starting beating him severely. When he returned, the Sahaba saw the wound marks on his face and said: We feared this. He said: The enemies of Allah Ta'ala were never so weak as they appeared today. If you agree, I would go to the Mosque tomorrow and recite to them openly the verses of the Holy Quraan.
When Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) embraced Islam, he first went to his maternal uncle's house and knocked his door. When the door was opened, Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) said: Do you know that I have become a Sabi? Then he went to a distinguished Quraish and informed him of his conversion. A man said to him: If you want to make your conversion public, you have got a better chance. Go to the Musjid-e-Haram when the Quraish assemble near the Black Stone. There is a man who is famous for disclosing secrets to the public. Whisper your secret in his eras and he will soon publicize it throughout the length and breadth of Mecca.
Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) acted according to the advice of that man. He whispered his secret into the ears of that infamous man. He shouted: Omar, the son of Khattab has become a Sabi. The pagans attacked Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) and started beating him. Finally, when his maternal uncle gestured through his sleeve that he has taken Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) in his refuge, the pagans calmed down.
The lady companions of the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) displayed more courage in the battles. During the Battle of Hunain, the pagans attacked Muslims very forcefully. Sayyidah Umm-e-Sulaim (radi Allahu anha) held a dagger in her hand. Sayyiduna Abu Talha (radi Allahu anhu) saw her and asked about the dagger. She said: I am waiting for a pagan to come closer to me so that I could kill him with this.
During the Battle of Trench, the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had kept his wives safe in a castle. A Jew came over there with the intention to harm them. Sayyidah Safiyah (radi Allahu anha) saw him and said to Sayyiduna Hasan (radi Allahu anhu): Possibly he may go back to his colleague and inform them about our whereabouts. Better go and kill him. He said: You know that I have no such experience. Sayyidah Safiyah (radi Allahu anha) came out herself and hurt the Jew with a pole of the tent and killed him instantaneously.
The entire Arabia shivered under the tyranny of Hajjaj. But when he crucified Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Zubair (radi Allahu anhu) and sent for his mother Sayyidah Asma (radi Allahu anha), she refused to attend his court. He sent his messenger second time saying: Tell her if she does not turn up this time, I will drag her by her hair. She refused again and said: Send those men who drag me by my hair. Hajjaj himself came over there and said: Have you seen what I have done to the enemy of Allah Ta'ala? She said: Yes I saw. You have ruined his world and he has ruined your Hereafter. I came to know that you call him the son of the lady of two belts. By Allah Ta'ala, I am the lady of two belts. With one belt I had tied the food of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) on the eve of Hijrah and the other belt is common to every woman which she cannot give up. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had said, Thaqif will give birth to a liar and a plunderer. We have seen Musailmah, the liar and I am sure you are the plunderer about whom the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has informed us. Hajjaj stood up and could not utter a single word.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
ABSTINENCE FROM SINS
The Sahaba considered small mistakes as major sins and abstained from them.
Sayyiduna Anas Bin Maalik (radi Allahu anhu) says: You are the people who commit many mistakes which appear to you as thin as a hair but during the lifetime of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) we considered them as the most dreadful sins.
The Sahaba never hid their follies under the veil of righteousness as we do today. They always called on the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and sincerely confessed their mistakes and sought Allah Ta'ala's forgiveness.
On one ocassion, during the Ramadaan, Sayyiduna Salmah Bin Sakhr (radi Allahu anhu) broke relations with his wife for one month. One night when she was attending him, he took her to bed and had intercourse. Since he had taken a pledge not to have sex with her for one month, he realized his mistake and informed his colleagues requesting them to take him to the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). People refused to accompany him. He went to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) alone and narrated the whole episode. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: You and such a blunder! He said: Yes, O Allah Ta'ala's Apostle (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)! I'll accept the Divine command. Pass on the verdict.
Once, Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) kissed his wife while he was fasting. He came to the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and said: I have committee a grave sin The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: What do you say about taking water into the mouth during a fast and gargle? He said: There is no harm. The Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Take the kiss in the same manner.
Once the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) was sitting in his mosque during the month of Ramadaan, when a companion came and said: O Prophet of Allah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)! I am burnt. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) asked what happened to him He said: I have enjoyed sex with my wife.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
TRUTHFULNESS
Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) says the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) hated a lie more than anything. If anyone told a lie in front of him, he Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam never forgave him unless he repented for that.
When Makkatul Mukarrama was conquered, the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) distributed the entire booty among the Quraish. When the Ansaar know this they said: What a surprise! Our share is being given to those whose blood is still flowing from our swords. The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) came to know this and gathered all the Ansaar and asked what they were saying. The Sahaba could not speak out their grievance in front of him because of his grace. The Ansaar however expressed their grievance. Sayyiduna Anas Bin Maalik (radi Allahu anhu) says: They confessed because they never told a lie to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam).
When the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) took some Sahaba to task for their non-participation in the Battle of Tabuk, the hypocrites expressed their apology under one or the other excuse and the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) accepted their apologies. But Sayyiduna Ka'b Bin Maalik (radi Allahu anhu) spoke the truth: If I save myself from your annoyance, it is possible that Allah Ta'ala may reveal the truth to you. If I tell you the truth, I will earn your anger but there will remain my hope for Allah Ta'ala's Mercy and Forgiveness in my favour. By Allah Ta'ala, I was not a disabled man at the time of Tabuk nor was I rich and agile before as I was at that time. The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: "He spoke the truth." Then the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) expressed his anger but when Allah Ta'ala accepted their repentance, he Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam forgave them. Sayyiduna Ka'b (radi Allahu anhu) says: I dont remember a better favour of Allah Ta'ala, the Almighty upon me after my conversion to Islam than the truth, which I spoke in front of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). Had I told a lie, I would have been destroyed like those hypocrites who told a lie in front of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam).
The Sahaba considered falsehood as the worst sin. If anyone levelled a charge of lie against any companion of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), he took it as seriously as the death of a near relative. During an expedition, Abdullah Bin Abi Salol said to his colleagues: Dont give anything to the Bedouins who accompany Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) so that they may run away. Once we return to Madina, the honourable people will kick out the people of lower status. Sayyiduna Zaid Bin Arqam (radi Allahu anhu) heard this and reported to his uncle who informed the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) called in Abdullah Bin Abi Salol and inquired him about the matter. He swore by Allah Ta'ala that he had not uttered those words. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) trusted him and rebuked Sayyiduna Zaid Bin Arqam (radi Allahu anhu) for wrong reporting. Sayyiduna Zaid (radi Allahu anhu) was shocked and confined himself to a secluded place. His neck bent with grief. When the Sura Munafiqeen was revealed, the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) called up Sayyiduna Zaid (radi Allahu anhu) and said: Allah Ta'ala has verified your truthfulness.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
HONESTY
Once, Sayyiduna Ubai Bin Ka'b (radi Allahu anhu) found a bag of hundred guineas which he reported to the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). He Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam said: "Keep searching the owner of the bag for one year". He tried to find out the owner for one year. Next year he called on the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) who repeated the same command. He continued the search for another year and came to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) the third year. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) repeated the same command this time also. He obeyed the command for the third time but could not find out the owner of the guineas. The Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) directed him: Keep the bag in your custody. It is better if you find the owner, otherwise spend the guineas as you like.
On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Maqdad (radi Allahu anhu) went to Baqi-e-Khanjbah for some work when he saw a rat accumulating guineas outside his hole. When counted, there were eighteen guineas in number. He picked up and brought them to the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and said: Accept these as Sadaqah. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Have you taken these guineas out of the hole on your own? He replied in the negative. The Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: May Allah Ta'ala grant you abundance.
Once, Sayyiduna Sufyaan Bin Abdullah Thaqafi (radi Allahu anhu) found food and brought it to Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) who said: Announce about it for one year and if you do not find out the owner, the food is yours. Sayyiduna Sufyaan (radi Allahu anhu) searched the owner for one year but could not get anyone. He again came to Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) and informed him. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) said: Now the food belongs to you. He said: I dont need it. Finally, Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) sent the food to the public stores.
Once, the attendant of Sayyiduna Jarir (radi Allahu anhu) returned home after grazing his cows. When Sayyiduna Jarir (radi Allahu anhu) saw a strange cow in the herd, he asked the attendant: Whom does it belong to? He replied: I dont know. It has come along with the other cows. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: Let it go. The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has said: He who shelters stray animals, is a misguided person.
A Companion of the Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) lost his she-camel. He said to one of his colleagues: Hold it up with you if you find it somewhere. The latter found the lost animal. But in the meantime the former disappeared. The latter kept the animal in his safe custody and waited for the owner. Meanwhile the she-camel fell ill. His wife said: The animal will die; it is better to slaughter it. This family was so poor that they were forced to eat the carrion. But they were not ready to slaughter it for their consumption. The she-camel ultimately died. Some days later, the owner of the animal came back and when he knew the whole episode, he said: Why did you not kill the animal for your food? The latter said: We felt shy of you.
Sayyiduna Zubair (radi Allahu anhu) was honest to such an extent that whenever somebody kept his belongings into his custody, he used to say: I may lose your wealth, so I accept it as a loan from you. Many Sahaba had kept their belongings into his custody. He protected the belongings with such a care that he arranged the sustenance of the families of the depositors from his own pocket but never spent a single Dirham from their deposits. This habit added to his borrowings that rose to hundred thousand of Dirhams.
A companion of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) possessed someones property into his custody. He said to the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam): I have the property of a person from the Azd tribe but I do not find any member of that tribe to hand him over that property. The Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Go and search for one year. He went and searched for one year. After one year he came to the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and told him that he could not find anyone. He again ordered him to search for another year. He searched for one year but could not find anyone. He came to Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and reported to him. The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Hand over the property to any Khuzai you meet first.
When Sayyiduna Aqeel Bin Abi Taalib (radi Allahu anhu) returned from the Battle of Hunain, his wife said: What have you brought? He gave her a needle and said: Sew clothes with this. Soon the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) proclaimed: Surrender even the needle and thread you possess. Sayyiduna Aqeel (radi Allahu anhu) took the needle back and surrendered it to the Baitul Mal.
The honesty of the Sahaba was evident not only in their money matters but it also reflected from their day-to-day behaviour. When Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) was on his deathbed, he sent a man to Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) in connection with some special requirement. He instructed the messenger: Convey Omar's Salaam to her and dont call me Ameer-ul-Moh'mineen in front of her, as I no more hold that authority.
Once Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) was visiting the outskirts of Madinatul Munawwara where he saw a virtuous shepherd busy in grazing his goats. He invited him to food, but he said he was observing fast. Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) wanted to further test his truthfulness. He said to him: Sell one of your goats to me, I will give you handsome price as well as the mutton to eat. The shepherd said: These goats do not belong to me; they belong to my master. Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) said: But your master is not seeing you here. The shepherd turned back and pointing towards the sky said: Where will the Allah Ta'ala go? Sayyiduna Abdullah (radi Allahu anhu) got so much absorbed with this phrase that he repeated it throughout the way to Madinatul Munawwara. When he returned to Madinatul Munawwara, he purchased the shepherd along with the goats and freed him and gifted the goats to him.

HUMILITY
The Sahaba were the most respected people in the Islamic world, but they were not having any false pride about this status. Humility was the main feature of their character.
On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Muhammad Bin Hanafiyah (radi Allahu anhu) asked his father Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu): Who is the second best person after the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)? He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu). He asked again: Who the next best after Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu)? He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: Omar (radi Allahu anhu). Sayyiduna Hanafiyah (radi Allahu anhu) said: Perhaps you are the next best after Omar (radi Allahu anhu)? Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) said: I am an ordinary person among the Muslims.
Sayyiduna Salmaan Farsi (radi Allahu anhu) was the Governor of Madayan but he lived so simple that nobody could recognize him as a ruler. Once a person purchased some grass and caught hold of Sayyiduna Salmaan (radi Allahu anhu) and loaded the heap of grass over his head. People said: He is the Ameer, the Companion of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). The man said: Forgive me, I could not recognize you. Give me that load. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: No, you have hired my service up to your doorsteps.
Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) was leading a life of humility. Once someone sent to his some costly dress to wear but he returned it saying: I cant wear this dress with the fear of false pride. Whenever he visited an assembly of people and if anyone stood up to show respect to him, he used to come back from there.

ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
REMISSION AND PARDON
The life of the Sahaba was the true reflection of the verse: And who restrain anger and pardon all men. (3:134)
On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Safwan (radi Allahu anhu) was sleeping in the Mosque when a person stole his blanket and ran away. But people caught him and brought to the court of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). The Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) ordered his hands to be amputated. Sayyiduna Safwan (radi Allahu anhu) came to know about this punishment and rushed to the court of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and said: Do you amputate his hands for just thirty Dirhams (the price of the blanket)? I sell this blanket to him. He will pay the price later. The Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: Why did you not forgive him before bringing to me?
Once the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) appointed Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) the custodian of Sadaqah-e-Fitr. A thief came thrice in the night and ran away with the food-grains. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) nabbed him each time but set him free on his apologies. Finally, he came to know that it was the Satan in disguise.
Sayyiduna Arwah Bin Masood (radi Allahu anhu) called on Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) and embraced Islam. When he returned to his native place Taif and invited his people to Islam, they became his enemies and resolved to kill him. One morning, when he proclaimed the call to prayer, a member of the Banu Maalik tribe targetted him with his arrow which proved to be fatal. Sayyiduna Arwah's (radi Allahu anhu) people came to know this and they came with arms and declared: We will not take rest unless we kill ten dignitaries of Banu Maalik to take the revenge of our chief. Sayyiduna Arwah (radi Allahu anhu) said to his people: Dont indulge in violence for me. I forgave my killer for the sake of general peace.
Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) was very strict in religious matter. Once, two persons from Taif made much noise in the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam)'s (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) Mosque. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) called them in and said: You make noise in the Prophet's Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam Mosque. If you were a city dweller, I would have punished you.

ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
THANKFULNESS
The Sahaba had lived diversified eras. They had experienced the agony of poverty and kept patience. Later they saw the pleasure of prosperity and expressed gratitude to Allah Ta'ala.
On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) said: I am brought up with the adversities of orphanage, migrated under the shadow of poverty. I was the employee of Ghazwan (warriors). When they camped at some place, I brought firewood for them. When they rode their camels, I sang the pilot song for them. I thank Allah Ta'ala Who strengthened the religion and made Abu Hurayra the Imam.
On one occasion, few Madinians called on Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu). He sent an attendant to his house to bring some food for them. His mother sent three rotis (bread) along with olive oil and salt. The food was served to the visitors. Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) raised a slogan: I thank Allah Ta'ala Who fed us with rotis while earlier we had nothing but dates and water.
Sayyiduna Salmaan Farsi (radi Allahu anhu) used to say while eating: I thank Allah Ta'ala Who patronized us and granted abundance in our sustenance.
Once Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) put on a new dress and said: I thank Allah Ta'ala Who provided me with new clothes to hide my private parts.

CONTENTMENT
The Sahaba were content with whatever they possessed. One portion of the Khums was given to Ahl-e-Bait and Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had appointed Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) as the custodian of that portion to be distributed among the family of the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) looked after this department even during the tenures of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) as Caliphs.
On one occasion, Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) received lot of things from somewhere. He wanted to give to Sayyiduna Ali (radi Allahu anhu) his usual share. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: This year we dont need it. You can give it to the Muslims. Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) sent that share to the Baitul-Maal.
Once, Abdul Aziz Bin Marwan (radi Allahu anhu) wrote to Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhu): Send your requisitions to me. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu wrote back: The Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) has said that the upper hand is better than the lower one. Provide for those who are under your patronage. I am neither demanding anything from you nor do I reject whatever Allah Ta'ala gives me through you.
On one ocassion, Sayyiduna Wail Bin Hajar (radi Allahu anhu) called on Sayyiduna Ameer Muawiyyah (radi Allahu anhu) who welcomed him warmly and decided to give him gifts and fix some stipend for his sustenance. Sayyiduna Wail (radi Allahu anhu) said: We dont need anything. Give to those who deserve more than us. Once, Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) tried to give thirty thousand Dirhams to Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Arqam (radi Allahu anhu) but he refused to accept.
