It has been stated that the life of a Muslim before and after his death are the same (i.e. they should be respected equally). - Mishkaat, Baabud-Dafn and Mirqaat
When Rasulullah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam mourned the death of his son, Ibrahim, he said the above which translates as : “My ears are tearful. My heart is full of anguish, but we will only say what pleases our Lord. O Ibrahim! We are indeed grieved over your separation.” (Bukhari)
"When you are a custodian of any dead, give them a fine shroud because they (the dead believers) visit one another place and meet one another (Tirmidhi)
As death approached him(sahabi) 'Amr Bin al-'As Radi Allahu anhusaid to his companions: "After you bury me, stand around my grave for as long as it takes to slaughter a camel and distribute its meat; I will thus be comforted by your presence while I am considering how to respond to my Lord's Messengers (the two angels)."(muslim)
Abu Umama Radi Allahu anhu said,"When I die, do with me as the Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam ordered us, saying, 'When one of your brothers dies and you have smoothed over the earth upon his grave, let one of you stand at the head of the grave and say, "O So and so Son of So and so" for he will hear, though he cannot reply - and then say, "O So and So, son of So and so," and he will say, "Direct me, Allah (swt)have mercy upon you mercy on you," though you will not hear it, but should say, "Remember the creed (Kalima Tayyiba) upon which you departed from this world, testifying that there is no god but Allah (swt), and Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam is His servant and messenger, and that you accepted Allah (swt)as your Lord, Islam as your religion, Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam as your prophet, and the Quran as your exemplar." For then the two angels Munkar and Nakir will take each other's hand and say, "Let us go, what is there to keep us beside someone who has been instructed how to make his plea?"A Man said, "O Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, what if one does not know the name of his mother?" and he answered, 'Then one should mention his descent from his mother Eve (sa) , saying, "O so and so son of Eve (sa) " (Muajam al Kabir Tabrani 7/287).
The Prophet(saws) used to say in his supplication when performing the prayer over the dead, "O Allah, whomever of us you make to live, let him live in Islam, and whomever of us you make to die, let him die in iman,"(ahmad)
"Prophet cast three handfuls of earth on the dead with both hands, that he sprinkled water on the grave of his son Ibrahim, and that he put small pebbles on it.”[ Al-Tirmidhi 1708]
Narrated Al-Muttalib: When Uthman ibn Maz'un died, he was brought out on his bier and buried. The Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam ordered a man to bring him a stone, but he was unable to carry it. The Apostle of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam got up and going over to it rolled up his sleeves. [Abu Dawud, Book 20, Number 3200]“
Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqah Radi Allahu anhu narrates that: "When the dear Prophet (sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam) used to pass the night with her, in the last part of the night he would go to the graveyard of Madinah (Muslim, Mishkat p.154)
