Every Tariqah will have a Wazifa (Awraad) and these have a big part to play in Tasawwuf. Imam Haddaad says you should have a minimum level of dhikr that you complete every day no matter what, and this is what the Wazifa aims to do. It's a means of cleaning the heart, it's a connection to the shaykh who gives the Wazifa, and it is both a du'a (prayer) and a dwaiy (medicine)
Even if somebody doesn't have a Pir, he should make some dhikr every day, such as "Ya Allah" 100 times a day, it isn't hard to say at all... but it will have massive benefits.
