Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Imam Sahib,
This may sound like a silly question, but since the necktie is a western invention and some say a symbol of western oppression on the arabs and middle-east, i wondered if their was any shariah ruling on this. I have also learnt that some scholars consider the tie as a symbol of the christian cross and trinity ?
I personally dont believe any of this but would like a second opinion.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah the Almighty who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Final Beloved Messenger of Islam Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam)Jazak'Allah for your question. Many 'ulama' have had different views and opinions upon the necktie. Just as you stated, sometimes it has been referred to as a symbol of the cross, or the Christians, but I have never heard that it is a symbol of western oppression, upon the Arabs, and the middle east, as it may be possible, that you have people in those Arab countries, such as journalists, newspaper reporters, etc. who also wear the necktie. Now when one is praying salah, then it is makruh, i.e. your salah is made makruh (whether it is tahrimi, or tanzihi is a matter of individual opinion of the scholars, depending on which school of thought you follow) to leave the tie on, in the state of salah. First of all for all the reasons given above, which constitute it's hurmah, and secondly, there should be nothing dangling, especially from the neck, while you are in a state of salah. If the tie is then tucked into the shirt, which prevents it from dangling then this is valid, as it is stuck around your own neck, just as cuffs and collars are attached to a shirt. Where for example, the under part of the tie, is tucked in, and the top part is let loose, then this may invalidate (fasid) your salah. Alternatively, the tie can be taken off, placed into a pocket of a jacket, before commencing to pray salah. As there is no hurmah in placing a tie into a pocket that invalidates the salah. Similarly, a person must dress in his best clothes when praying salah. The salah is the ascension of the believer. In a Hadith it states: 'as salatu mi'rajul mu'mini'
'the salah is the ascension of the believer'. So why is it that we can dress our best for all worldly ascensions like marriage, dinner, interview, and promotion, yet when it comes to the ultimate re-union with the Almighty Allah, we do not adhere to His rules, and the rules of His Beloved Messenger (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam)? I would therefore say that salah should be performed in an Islamic manner, with the appropriate Islamic code of dress. If we are to reach the pleasure, for the sake of the Almighty Allah, than it is His way that we must chose, and not the way of any other society. May Allah the Almighty, help us all to lead an Islamic way of life, and may He keep us firm upon the religion of Islam, so that we may benefit not only in this world, but also in the hereafter.Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM.
