ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam
MODESTY
The Beloved Habeeb (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) says: Modesty is a branch of faith. This branch of faith was so fresh and green in the hearts of the Sahaba that they even felt shy in enjoying sex with their wives.
Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was such a shy person that he never bathed naked even if the door of the house was shut. When his wifes maid-servant brought his clothes after his bath, he used to instruct her: Dont look at me, as this is not lawful for you.
Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) himself was very considerate about the shyness of Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu). Once, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Omar (radi Allahu anhu) called on Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) who lay in his house with his thighs uncovered. But when Sayyiduna Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) arrived there, he covered his thighs. Sayyidah Ayesha (radi Allahu anha) asked the reason. He Sallal Laahu Ta'ala Alayhi Wa Sallam said: Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) is a shy person. Had I remained in that position, he would not have talked to me.
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ashari (radi Allahu anhu) used to bathe in a dark house, yet he never stood erect due to shyness. On one ocassion, he saw some people standing in water without a wrapper. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: I would like to die and come to life again and again but would never approve this shamelessness.
Once Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) went to a Hamaam and saw people bathing naked. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu covered his eyes and came back. When the owner of the Hamaam came to know this, he asked his clients to vacate the Hamaam. He washed the Hamaam and purified it and then sent a request to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Omar (radi Allahu anhuma) to come and take a bath. One day somebody asked him why he stayed away from the Hamaam. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: I dont like somebody to look at my private parts. The other person said: You could cover them with a wrapper. He Radi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu said: I also dont like to see the private parts of someone else.
Sayyiduna Abdullah Bin Aamir (radi Allahu anhu) was once bathing. An orphan boy, who was looked after by his father Sayyiduna Aamir (radi Allahu anhu), was also taking bath with him. Both of them were pouring water on each other. Sayyiduna Aamir (radi Allahu anhu) saw them and said: You are looking at each others private parts. By Allah Ta'ala! I was considering you better than us as you are born in Islamic era and not in the era of ignorance like us, but you are just opposite that.
