As-Salaam alaikum,
"The life of this world is merely a diversion and amusement, the true life is in the Hereafter, if only they knew." (Ankabut, 29:64) . And...
God Almighty aks rhetorically in the Qur'an :--
"So where are you going?" then He answers, "To your Lord is your return" (At-Takwir, 81:26)
"O mankind, you are ever toiling towards your Lord and will meet Him" (84:6)
These and other verses in the Holy Qur'an indicate that there is no escape from striving because Islam regards this world as illusory and the Hereafter as real. In that regard, we must strengthen the foundation of our 'azm (resolution) by being steadfast in religion, observing God's Commandments and the Prophet's Sunnah with zeal and being consistent in the spiritual moments (waqt) we live/move through.
Success on the path to God entails self-discipline and purification of the soul. According to a famous hadith, "The Prophet of God dispatched a contingent of the army (to the battle front). Upon their return, he said :'Blessed are those who have performed the minor jihad and have yet to perform the majot jihad'. When we asked, 'What is the major jihad?' The Prophet replied :'The jihad of the self. "(Bayhaqi).
Lexically, jihad means to strive and struggle, but in the context of this hadith, it means to engage in warfare with the self because the soul is the origin of conflict and contrary properties.
