The Muslim Has A Sense Of Humour
The Muslim has a sense of humour, which makes people like him. He mixes with them and jokes with them when it is appropriate to do so, without going to extremes or saying anything hurtful. Similarly, when he is serious, he does not go to extremes of harshness and strictness. His humour is within the limits of Islamic tolerance, and does not go beyond the bounds of truth. This is the example of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and the Sahabah in their jokes and humour. It is reported that the Sahabah said to the Prophet (Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam): "You are joking with us." He said, "But I never say anything but the truth." (Bukhari)
So how much can we laugh ? Personally i think the key word is 'excessiveness' ... dont over do it ! We all love to sit down once in a while and watch a funny movie, or show, but as long as we dont get too attached to it, and so it affects our daily duties of worship, i cant see there being a problem ?
So always have a pleasant disposition and good nature.
Abu Umamah (Radi allahu anhu) said:
''That the Beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most cheerful among the people and posessed the best nature.''
Tabrani and al Haithami Vol IX p 17

Good post brother, nothing wrong with the occasional laugh. There is a hadith where the Prophet [peace be upon him] laughed at loud fro some reason, and the back of his teeth were showing .... (i shall try to locate this hadith) also i think the Wahhabi interpretators have said somewhere,'' he never laughed but only occasionally smiled '' Like most things they've twisted it to suit their own purposes. May Allah tala guide all Muslims onto the straight path!

I agree, nothing wrong with having a laugh as long as we know where to stop.
Also dont laugh out too loud where you make yourself noticed or heard to others.
You know sometimes when your in a wedding and some person will do a annoying laugh, then it will get louder and louder.... just to get laughs and be noticed.

Some people have supposed the Beloved Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) to have been a severe, austere man, but in fact he was always smiling. One companion said of him: ‘I have seen no person smiling more than the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace).’ Aishah said: 'He was the softest and most kind of all people; and he was a man like you, except that he was cheerful and smiling.'
When people laughed, he laughed with them. Although his laugh was usually no more than a smile, sometimes it was said of him that he threw back his head and laughed so completely that his teeth shone like white hailstones. There are many hadiths recording how the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) laughed so heartily at something that people could see his molar teeth! For example, when Aishah as a child argued with him about her model horses with wings, and pointed out that Solomon had such horses, Thereupon the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) laughed so heartily that I could see his molar teeth.’ (Abu Dawud 2316).

a few years back on occasions i could go over the top when someone tells me something funny, i remember mum giving me a stare to calm down and have some respect, lol. but i have now, espec when someone is here.
although i have heard that when you laugh so much, amoungst a group of you continuassly, that by the end of the day you'll start crying over something or the other, it has happened to me once or twice, but i dont know if its true or just a coincidence. what do you all think?

Assalam O alaikum I am glad you have all had a laugh at my expence ;D ha ha No it did come out wrong, so I can see the funny side. what I meant to say is. When people laugh too loud to get attention. Not just at weddings it could be any where usually in a hall at school .... anyway back to the subject, and then when they laugh loud if nobody responded they tend to laugh louder and louder and it does get annoying in the end.

I think it depends on whose translation you are reading if you wanted to know about this. But i think the only one worth reading regarding Rasollalahs (Salla Allahu alaihe wa Sallam) character is Shamail Tirmidhi.
Shamail Tirmidhi
(220-221) Hadith 5 & 6 Jabir ibn Abdullah radiyallahu anhu says, “After I accepted Islam, Rasoolullah (Salla Allahu alaihe wa Sallam) never prohibited me from attending his assemblies. Whenever he saw me he laughed.”
In the second narration it is stated that he smiled.
Commentary The second narration is mentioned because it may be known that by laughing as mentioned in the first hadith, it is meant that Sayyidina Rasoolullah (Salla Allahu alaihe wa Sallam) smiled. This smile is to show happiness, as to meet one cheerfully makes one feel at ease. I have observed that my elders at times met visitors with such happiness and cheerfulness that the visitor may feel that happiness is being felt by our coming.

One of the hadiths that reflects the Noble Prophet's (peace be upon him) sense of humour and enjoyment of fun is the report that Ahmad gives ftom 'A'ishah who said:
"I went out with the Prophet (Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam) on a journey. At that time I was a young girl and was quite slender. The Prophet (Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam) told the people, 'Go on ahead,' so they went ahead, then he said to me, 'Come, let us have a race.' So I raced with him, and I won. He let the matter rest until I had gained weight. Later, I accompanied him on another journey. He told the people, 'Go on ahead,' so they went ahead. He said to me, 'Come, let us have a race.' So I raced with him, and he won. He began to laugh, and said, 'This is for that."'
The Sahabah saw nothing wrong with joking or having fun, as they saw the Prophet (salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam), their leader and teacher, occasionally doing so. The many delightful stories about their sense of humour reflect the easy-going nature of the first Islamic society, and how far removed it was from narrow-mindedness and gloom.

Maybe some could argue its not desirable, but then again buying newspapers or watching tv could be considered haram !!

I think any action depends on the intentions of the person ... if one is to acquire unislamic material, which isnt what we know to be haram then i think it would be permissible under the circumstances.
