Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu Was looking flicking through the channels before, then noticed this guy on one of the news channels with a white imamah on (turban). He was talking about the cartoon's and Islam. I didnt know who he was, but his accent was foreign, anyway after he spoke briefly the news presenter said he as an Imam at a Mosque in Paris. Anyway what struck me then was that this guy had what could only loosely be described as a beard, it was more like a goatee to be honest. This 'beard' was at the most about half an inch long, and this Imam was probably in his 50's .... I began to realise then that we dont have an issue here in the uk with this alhamdolilah, as all the Imam's i know and have seen that lead the prayers have the full sunnat beard. I certainly wouldnt be happy if we suddenly had a new Imam in my local masjid with such a beard. I honestly dont think i could pray salat behind him, unless he had a valid reason for having such a small beard, ie .. medical.

Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu The Hanafi fiqh (followed mainly in the Indo-Pak region) states the the beard should consist of one fist full.I think the imam you may have seen on TV may have been an imam from another school i.e. Shafi,Maliki or Hanbali that might be the case, Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) knows best!!!!

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
I think one has to be careful with these issues, at the end of the days these are men of knowledge, and we shouldnt judge or question without knowing the facts.

I know this has got nothing to do with Imams but one of the reasons why you dont see many palestinians with beards is because the likeness to the traditional jews who all wear beards. I have been told this by someone who has been to the middle east many times.

I have been told this by someone who has been to the middle east many times. They should make the intention to grow their beards so as to follow the sunnah of the Beloved Rasool Sallalahu alaihi wasallam, not the example of the 'traditional' jews. To have such an intention and shave the beard is worse than those who simply choose to shave the beard... as this would render the intention and the deed as Biddat-e-Saiyye'ah (Evil Innovation). And Rasool Sallalahu alaihi wasallam has said that those who commit Biddat-e-Saiyye'ah are the dogs of Jahannam. Nabi Sallalahu alaihi wasallam commands: "Khaaliful Mushrikeen! Wa'firu al-Luha!" "Do not imitate the Mushrikeen(Polytheists)! Grow the beard!" [Muttafakun alaih - agreed upon by Sahih Bukhari and Muslim Shareef]

Subhanallah, another straightforward answer. Seems ignorance and cultural differences are deep in certain arabic countries.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that the Glorious Prophet of Islam (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: 'Five things are from the traditions of the Prophets of the old: circumcision, removing the hair below the navel, trimming the moustaches, cutting the nails and removing the hair from armpit'. (Bukhari, Muslim)
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (radi Allahu anhu) reported that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said: 'Trim your moustaches and grow your beard and follow not the fire-worshippers'. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Talking of our middle eastern brothers and poss some others, they tend to shave their beards and grow their mustaches, which is completely opposite to Sunnah ?
Mind you if their Imams dont follow the Sunnah properley what chance have the rest of the community ?

Only the sub-continent muslims seem to apply the sunnah of the beard the most.
