Salaam All,
Over the last few months I have been investigating into what is regarded as 'halal' and 'haram' in islam.
So far my findings are inconclusive.
I am a young lawyer from london of pakistani origin who has spent his whole life eating meat from shops and restaurants which i have regarded as being 'halal', i.e meat from the local pakistani butcher shop and never from somewhere such as Mcdonalds etc.
However the quranic translation of halal states clearly that everything is made halal for you except "...alcohol,dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which the name of other than Allah hath been invoked".
The issue I am having is in finding in the quran or the hadiths that precede it, anywhere (except the bukhari translation) where it states anything about the animal being slaughtered in Allah's (swt) name. Could this mean that Allah's (swt) name could be recited before consumtion and not neccessarily upon the slaughter?
Could 'halal' as we know it be a cultural thing and not an islamic thing? I know many saudis who eat meat in this manner and it has always been a subject which intrigues me. As well as this, halal meat is a lot more expensive than 'regular' meat, although slaughtered in identical ways. And now with the birth of HMC, their branded certified meat is slighly more expensive than other 'halal' meat.
Is this all a money making scheme? What is the history behind it?
Do other cultures other than those originating from the sub-continent share the same beliefs?
Inshallah someone out there can help answer these questions.
Salaam,
Yasser
