AOA I am a mureed of the naqhbandi tariqat. Recently I was debating with someone who said that sufism is bidaa. I disagreed and he asked me for evidence that it was the way of the Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam Please can you help me answer his question. Jazakallah

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam Sufism comes from the word 'saf' or 'safa', which means purity. The people of the platform (as'hab-e-suffah) were also pure people who had devoted their lives solely for the pleasure of Allah the Almighty, and His Beloved Messenger Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam. This is the real origin of Sufism. In order to provide evidence, one needs to study the 'ashab-e-Suffah', and their role in Islam, their way of life, their faith, sincerity, devotion, trust, generousity, godwariness, fear, and rank. Only then will the true picture of a Sufi, and why a Sufi goes into so much trouble of Mujahidah, come to light. The Sufis way, is the way of the 'ashab-e-suffah', who were all the Ennobled Companions of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam. Any body who follows these people can never be guilty of bid'ah, but only guilty of true Islam. True Islam is the purpose of the people in general, and the way the 'as'hab-e-suffah' led their lives was no different to the life of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, as they fulfilled His sunnahs as much as possible, and that they held tight to the banner of Islam. Biography of such personalities is never ending, and the majority of the scholars of the ahl-as-Sunnah were also Sufis. For a more detailed account of any of the above issues, please do not hesitate to post again. Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
