There are lots of guides there just read carefully, guides likethese might help:
Convert DVDs to SVCD or CVD using DVD2SVCD Copy your DVD into DivX format - Guide for 4:3 movies
Alternatvely why not just use your burning software, such as nero, to create a back up? They have options for creating back ups on the menu screen.

Yes you will have to convert it to mpeg to save it to hard drive, if it is a VCD and DVD. There are many guides on the link I posted above which show you how to do this, one of the programs you can use is VCDEasy. Just look at the guides once more carefully inshallah you'll find your answer.

highlight all folders on the disc and right click to select 'copy' then right click anywhere on pc and click 'paste'. This will copy all content on the disc.
Open the 'video-ts' folder and click on any vts file to view whatever your chosen content is. The actual content of the disc will have a large capacity showing ie
vts-01-04 359,008KB
this says the size of file is over 350mb which is the content.
I have nusrats's qawwali on vcd that i copied to hdd and now play merrifully on wma 9.
Just make sure you have all the necessary codecs to display picture and produce audio.
I also recorded the Malaysian Grand Prix via tv to my dvd recorder and copied it straight to hdd. You can do this will any dvd'd/vcd's etc.
