Does technology play a part in Islam?
History reminds us that during the peak of the Islamic empire, technological advancements were happeneing almost as fast as they are today. They made life easier for everyone, but was this technology the downfall of Islam?
Is technology helping Islam spread again, with aid of MP3 Quranic surahs and learn arabic software and azaan time software and moonsighting programs?
Can Islam regain its historical greatness and will technology play a part in this revolution?
Or do you think technology is a waste of time as it will all be destroyed anyway?

I'm surprised that no one has responded to this discussion so far as we are all using technology is some way to learn about Islam. Technology is definately playing a part in educating us, and its also creating an awareness amongst those who know little or nothing about Islam, whether it be via the internet, tv channels or dvd's.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuWe have had similar discussions recently in the Islamic discussion board, nevertheless its important we raise awareness of the important issues. One thing that was discussed is how far should one go with new technology, i mean actually share it with Islam ? Should we use new techniques and methods to help us learn new things or should we stick to traditional methods? OBVIOUSLY our worship our salaah will be untouched but what about digital technology INSIDE OUR MOSQUES ..... I dont think technology is a waste of time, as everything has its uses and is good for the period it was aimed at, however we have to be careful of innovations, does anyone remember the automatic wudu machine ?

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuNo worries br Abdul Rafiq Good thread br Moyeen Technology has done a lot to help promote the awareness of Islam this ranges from video',dvds, p-point presentations and even the internet as seen by this forum. Even TV stations such as QTV allow us to watch live mehfils, thus enhancing our knowledge about deen-e-Islam. It has also made it more easy for us i.e.reicievers that our sisters can hear bayans/talk from home too. Such gadgets are also usefull for those who live far from mosques aswell. However if the technology used is contradicting the sunnah of Huzur Paak Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam then i would stay well clear of it i.e. auto-wudhu

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Technology has helped me in so many ways as a new Muslim. I have been able to download english speeches by Sunni scholars, I found this site and have learnt a great deal about Islam and my Pir o Murshid, I have been able to download short Surahs and put them on a CD which has helped me to memorize more of them (I aim to have memorized the last 10 by the end of the year, only 3 to go Alhamdolillah). On the other side it can be dangerous and detrimental to our faith. The internet has so much misguidance, it is easy to backbite in forums, it can be a great source of good and an even greater source of evil if we are not careful. Also things like the auto wudhu machine? I don't care what anyone says I think that thing is bad news.
I guess what I am saying is we don't have to shy away from technology like the Amish do but we must be careful. Like Br. Hafeez has said if it contradicts the Sunnah of our Beloved Prophet Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam then stay clear of it.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
A good topic. I am all for technology, well in moderation. I mean without videos and dvds, and satellite how else can dawah be spread to throughout the globe. I mean how many people would have heard of Owais Raza Qadri outside of Pakistan if it wasnt for technology! Look at how many thousands are turning a new life and corner because of his naats, the options are endless.
But there are other things like scientific research, human cloning, robotics, plastic surgery, face implants etc these are all altering the course of nature ...of what Allah ta'ala had intended.
The muslim countries are not powerful enough to control or dominiate the technological advances in the market, and those days of muslims leading the field of sciences are long gone.

Some good replies, jazakallah brothers.
I think the main point we can take out of this is that technology is great as long as it is within the boundaries of Islamic Law.
We can see that when there are no boundaries technology can go out of control, such plastic surgery and human cloning as mentioned by brother Muhammed Sadiq.
Technology is constantly 'evolving' and changing and we are suprised by every new gadget that comes out, but then I remember the Quran and look back at the point made by many muffasireen about how Adam alayhis 'salam knows the names of ALL these things.
SUBHANALLAH!
