In theory, the standalone versions will give you better performance and quality output. It all depends what your needs are and how much you want to spend. The higher quality resolution you want for printing and scanning will probably cost you more. It also depends on how much space you've got to accomodate what you need. Separates will take up more room than an all in one item. I can only advise you on what to look for, other than that its down to your personal preference, some all in ones are easier to use than others and they come in different shapes and sizes, with the bonus of having a copier funtion too and some even come with photo printing facilities too. Things to look out for in both separates and all in ones: check prices of replacing the ink cartridges, print resolution of the printer (measured in dpi, the higher the figures, the better the print), how many pages the printer prints in a minute, for both colour and b&w (measured in ppm), scanning resolution for the scanner (also measured in dpi, the higher the figures, the better the scan), how many pages the printer tray can hold, do you get a cable to connect your printer or the all in one to your pc. 2 of the cheapest all in ones i found available at your local high st retailer at around £40: www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0204549105.1162853217@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccefaddjfigldmicflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=1&sm=3&tm=0&sku=051548&category_oid=-20748www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1342756130.1162854007@@@@&BV_EngineID=cceladdjfigleggcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=021870&category_oid=-24820if these links dont work, just browse www.currys.co.uk and www.pcworld.co.uki hope this is of some help.

i use an all in one, printer scanner copier. not too big and cost me £80. the print quality is good on it. but like brother mahmood said it depnds what you want to print etc? if it is standard stuff then all in one is better, BUT if you print loads of high colour posters etc then seperate is better.

what is cheaper ink cartridge or laser toner?
I know you can refill cartridges but the cost of a new one is sometimes similar to refill cost.
I've also heard that laser toners can also be refilled and it is a much easier process.
Can anyone shed any light please.

Purchasing compatible ink cartridges do have certain setbacks. Manufacturers in their small print tell that your warranty is void should you use compatible inks as the circuit on the cartridge is different in operation to the originals.
The cheapest in terms of running costs is officially HP. Epson comes close to them and the worst, subject to opinion, are the Lexmarks.
One tip is to ask what the policies are for in store replacements. Usually they cost £20 for a 3 year instant replacement in some stores which is a great money saver should your choice of printer is not repairable if under a certain price bracket.
Take a HP or an Epson all in one and you will be fine. My personal printer is the Epson dx 3850 all in one. Bought from pc world for £60 plus £20 for 3 year instore replacement.

They always do to make way for newer models. Wait for retail prices of xp based systems to come down when vista machines are released!
