yes you read the title right, your eyes weren't deceiving you. i came across this article and thought id share it with you.............. Chapattis could be the cause of aching bones, it has been suggested. Emma Butler, Communications Officer for the National Osteoporosis Society UK: “Chapattis reduce calcium absorption which can lead to bone problems in old age.” It could explain why so many Asian people, especially women, complain of aching arms and legs – chapattis is the main food in their diet.” Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and are then more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist. Emma Butler said: “If a person has osteoporosis, they need a diet rich of calcium and vitamin D. Its recommended that everybody gets 20 minutes of sunlight on their face and arms everyday throughout the summer months.” Asian people living in hot countries such as those in the subcontinent may be saved from aching limbs because of the vitamin D they get from the sun. “Osteoporosis and bone problems are very rare in countries like Pakistan and India and that might be due to different diets, said Emma Butler, “If anybody has bone problems, aches, etc, we advise them to see their doctors.” Article taken from “The Asian People” So then sisters…. Anyone suffer from aches and pains?? Now you know why! lol

“Chapattis reduce calcium absorption which can lead to bone problems in old age.” OMG, chapattis is like our staple diet! Lol. An interesting article sister. But we must remember that there are a number of risk factors for osteoporosis such as age, genetics, hormones and lifestyle factors. It is also known to be prevalent among Asians (as well as Caucasians), but surely chapattis is not the sole cause. Sisters, I think we might be alright consuming chaps for now! Vitamin D is known to be the most important nutrient that increases calcium absorption. It can be obtained from a small number of foods (eg: tinned fish in oil, eggs, milk, margarine) but the best source of Vitamin D is from sunlight, which we don’t get much of in this country. Anyways, here are some facts: Substances that can reduce calcium absorption ( when taken in large quantities): - Phytates - present in fibre, particularly unprocessed bran
- Tannins - present in tea
- Oxalate - present in spinach
- Caffeine - present in coffee, tea, cola drinks
- Alcohol - excessive intake
- Phosphate without calcium eg soft drinks
Substances that increase the loss of calcium in the urine are: - Salt: having a high salt diet increases urinary calcium loss
- Protein: excessive intake of protein from animal sources (more than 4 times per day)
- Caffeine: excessive intake of coffee, tea and other fluids causes increased out put of urine - therefore increased loss of calcium
Source: Preventing OsteoporosisHmmm....Tea and coffee are shown to be risk factors - we all know how much us Asians love tea! But I think the key thing here is that it is alright if certain foods are eaten in moderation. Foods such as tea, coffee and even chapattis only pose a threat when consumed excessively or in large quantities. For more information on Osteoporosis, visit: National Osteoporosis Society, UK

I visited the nurse today and she was telling me how Asian women tend to suffer from lack of calcium. I thought yeah because of the lack of sunshine in the UK, but then she goes, "Asian women tend to cover themselves up so they don't get Vitmain D from the sun". She wasn't being mean or anything, but I just never thought of it that way. But there's no way we're going to dress any differently so I think we'd better start eating plenty of tinned fish in oil, eggs, milk and margarine!

wel by being covered we'r being saved from the cancer causing stuff from the sun! Well said! Also most English cant get enough of our chapattis and nan bread, not least our curries. Our diet and food intake is just the right blend of meat and veg, also we have a great variety of foods, fruits and savouries to choose from theres something for every stomach and apetitie. The only problem i see is we seem to be steering towards copying every single english/western dish
