Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Initiation
The ceremony of the initiation can be different in each Sufi order. It may start with a short speech of the shaykh to his mureed-to-be wherein some of the qualities that he or she should emulate, are mentioned. Thereafter the newcomer has to say two cycles of prayer.
Then he or she has to sit in front of the shaykh with his/her right hand in the hand of the shaykh and then recites some verses of the Qur'an like:
- sura Fatiha (Qur'an 1:1-7)
- sura Jonas (Qur'an 10:1-109)
- The fist 10 verses of sura The Victory (Qur'an 48:1-10)
- The 56th verse of sura The Confederates (Qur'an 33:56)
- The final 3 verses of sura The Rangers (Qur'an 37:180-182).
Then the shaykh recites the istighfar, a prayer for forgiveness of the future mureed and gives the advice to keep the spiritual guide always in mind, both in this world as well as in the hereafter.
Having arrived at this point in the initiation ceremony the shaykh says: 'You should know that the prophet Muhammad (Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) is our prophet and that shaykh (the name of the founder of the order is given) is our shaykh. You should realise that the oath of loyalty implies to be loyal to Allah. This hand is the hand of shaykh (the name of the founder of the order is given)'.
Now the silsila of the order may be described, that is, the shaykh mentions the chain of initiations starting with the prophet and after mentioning each name in this chain he asks for their help. He continues thus: 'I am the representative of shaykh (the name of the founder is given). I have accepted his hand and this hand is his. And now I accept you with this hand as his mureed'.
The disciple then replies: 'I accept you as well'. The shaykh reacts thus: 'Now you are accepted in the .... order of Sufis'.
A little later the shaykh performs a certain dhikr and his mureed recites the same three times. He asks his mureed to recite the first sura of the Qur'an and to recite some words of blessing on the prophet. After once again having prayed for the forgiveness of the sins of the new mureed he gives some water to him or her. In a private talk the mureed receives instructions as to which spiritual practices should be performed. The shaykh may give a new name to the mureed as a new life has started for the disciple. This marks the end of the initiation ceremony in a Sufi order.

can someone please describe how Sheikh-ul-Islam or Gazi-e-Millat initiate their mureeds,
is there a different initiation method for new mureeds who's parents are already mureeds?
or is it the same for all new mureeds?
also how does one go about trying to become a mureed of either of these great personalities?
can someone be refused? are there any pre-conditions?

I've never witnessed the initiation of a mureed of any sheikh so I don't know what happens.
Can someone tell me specifically how Sheikh-ul-Islam carries out their initiation, I'm interested.
when you have heard the speeches of the calibre of Hazrat Madni Mian and Gazi-e-Millat then you naturally become intrigued and interested.

jazakallah for all the posts, sorry for the long post but I feel I may have been misunderstood.
I have not attended a mehfil of Hazrat Madni Mian or Hazrat Hashmi Mian, hence the reason why I ask my question.
It would have been good to have a personal insight or description. Hazrat Sheikh-ul-Islam is someone who I deeply respect and revere. When someone makes an impact or impression you are intrigued by their actions and methods, you have the urge to find out more.
I longed to read the Hajj diary (Hajj with Sheikh-ul-Islam) that was compiled by a fortunate mureed, because I wanted to see how Hazrat Saheb conducts themselves and undertakes the ritual activities. For sure, we can get a book or ask someone how to perform Hajj but when someone makes an impact then you want to know how this particular person handles themselves. Similarly, I requested if someone can provide an insight into the initiation ceremony conducted by Sheikh-ul-Islam.
I may have got the wrong impression but I just wanted to clarify myself and please forgive me if I have caused any offence.
"The presence of Sufi is like a lake upon which the followers travel within their individual boat. The vast area of the lake is explored by the many boats. Some boats excel in their expolaration and near the River of Mercy which ultimately leads to the Ocean of the Almighty. Others labour and struggle within the high winds but have at least reached the stage of the lake."
I see myslef having not reached the stage of the lake, being on the stream leading to the lake.

Brother Newcomer there is no need for you to apologise. Your question is very real, is natural in your thoughts and quests and gives us a wonderful opportunity to speak about our personal experiences during our initiation.
The initiation process described by our Brother 'Sunni' (in the first post) is very interesting but the basics and the jist of the ceremony is precisely as he describes and that is the 'hand' that is given to the Shaykh in ones presence (not just for 'spiritual' acceptance of the Spiritual Order but in its very real 'physical' sense as well), by giving ones hand to an authority means giving one self up in acceptance, submission and to follow and serve - for this very reason Hadrat Sayyedus Shohada Imam Husain Radi Allahu anhu inclined from giving their noble hand in the hand of the tyrant Yazeed, and the noble hands of the Noble Companions given to the most excellent and matchless hand of their Master and our Aqa Rasoolai Kareem Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam during 'Bayt e Ridwan' oath of allegiance, Almighty Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala revealed in the Qur'an though the hands were placed on the Hand of the Beloved in reality they are on the Hand of Allah! Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. On the same token though the hand is placed on the hand of the Shaykh in essence and reality the hand is placed with all the Mashaykh and Awliya before the Shaykh going back to, linking and meeting up with the final destination, the Ocean of Spiritual Bliss the Ocean of Mercy and Blessings ie Huzoor Sayyidul 'Alimeen Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam.
Before i go off track and to stay on the topic, from what i have learnt and understood by sitting in the 'sohbah' company of Hadrat Shaykh al Islam wal Muslimeen during the last 25 years or so, the process of initiation 'bayt' is a very personal process for every individual. The more a 'seeker' is eager, passionate and thirsty to find or bow in the presence of his/her spiritual mentor for acceptance the more that individual is put through a test and hardship by his Shaykh to be or those before him anticipating the 'seekers' initiation. One can find many examples of this by reading the lives of the Awliya Allah.
Brother Sunni mentions in his post recitation of various 'ayatai mubaraka' and verses from the Noble Qur'an al Kareem before the ceremony of initiation. Certain Mashaykh had in the past advised those wishing to enter their spiritual order to endure a certain test, to read so many 'wazaif' for so many days or months and then report back etc. Through their 'roohaniat' spiritual power they would assess the individual and if need be ask them to further go another ritual/meditation or 'wird and wazaif'. The other end of this aspect is nowadays we see that mass gatherings are informed to become 'mureeds' of a Shaykh (whether they are prepared or not) at the actual instance. At times the initiation with the Guide is over a 'telephone' connection so the mureeds can only hear the Shaykh and thus repeat the words of initiation after him. Without doubt this process is acceptable and has worked for certain individuals.
(The initiation process adopted by Shaykh al Islam to be continued-InshaAllah).

Regarding the initiation process adopted by Hadrat Shaykh al Islam 'The Guardian of Shariah and Inheritor of Tariqah', it is a very formal and a straight forward process. Once someone shows a desire or interest in taking the oath/pledge 'bayah' in the hands of Hadrat Shaykh al Islam the disciple is asked to grasp Hadrat's 'chadar' (material they carry around with them-generally seen around their neck and hanging over the shoulders), this has to be strictly done by placing the 'chadar' over the left hand/palm and then tightly grasped with the right hand over it. With the disciple's eyes closed and head bowed, Hadrat starts the initiation with the Tawwuz and Tasmiyya. The disciple is asked to repeat all of the Shaykh's words slowly after them. Hadrat then continues with the praise of the Almighty Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and Salutations upon the Beloved of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam which is then followed by humbly repenting 'doing towbah and istighfar' to the Almighty Allah from all the known and unknown sins and transgressions in the past life. This is followed by beseeching Allah to enter the 'Silsila' spiritual chain of the Ashrafi, Qaderi and Chishti order, for success and prosperity both in this world and the hereafter. Once Hadrat says the word 'ameen' the disciple releases the chadar which had just intiated and connected his/her links to the Most Beloved Rasool of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala and all the Awliya Allah upto the Spiritual Master upon whose hands the disciple gave his hand. Hadrat then raise their hands and follow the initiation process by a final supplication to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala. I have heard this 'dua' to be read aloud and at times quietly by Hadrat. Hadrat will then either drink a little water from a glass or blow in it and ask for the disciple to drink the rest. This completes the process. Generally if one is really prepared and fully understands the whole process of 'bayah' it is a intensley important part of ones life. Though for some it may only entail the process of initiation and then when ever or where ever one is asked 'who is your Shaykh/Peer?', is the only other occasion the thought of ones Shaykh may come to mind. But for the real seekers of spiritual elevation and peace the process of initiation is truly a new leash of life and undoubtedly the Murshid/Shaykh do realise with what intention each seeker comes to their fold.

Having said that bhai jaan, some fortunate mureeds will tell you that when they swore the oath of allegiance to Shaykh al Islam they were lucky enough to make this pledge by actually grasping their hands rather than the 'chadar'.
If I may also mention here Hadrat have never advertised nor encouraged Muslim's to enter the Ashrafi Spiritual Order through themselves. Rather when questioned about buying a centre, 'khanqa or idara' or even applying for UK citizenship they have on numerous occasions repeated throughout the years during the evening gatherings in the United Kingdom and stressed more recently during the formation of various Mission Branches that their purpose and intention of coming to the UK is not to make people mureeds or enter the Ashrafi Spiritual Order but to make the Muslims stronger in their beliefs and Iman with the connections and love for Huzoor Sayyidul 'Alimeen Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, The Noble Companions, The Pure Household and through the lives of the Awliya Allah and to warn the sunni masses of the dangers of the heretical sects. This is the basis and foundation of the 'Muhaddith e Azam Mission'.
Hadrat have said that those who are affiliated with the Qaderi, Chisti, Naqsbandi or Soharwardi order is irrespective they all hold the same honour in their eyes and are safe for the attachments they have through these spiritual chains will eventually be their saviour. Our task is to make their beliefs and attachments stronger but the most important and difficult task is to make the wandering Sunnis stronger in Iman and try to bring those who have slipped the net back to the fold of the Ahle Sunnah wal Jama'h.
Shaykh al Islam are certainly a unique personality amongst the Ulema and Mashaykh today, for as well as being blessed with the status of having the 'Fatemi' blood running through their veins (Sayyid 'Alai Rasool) they are an outstanding 'Alim e Deen and Mufti, A Sufi and Spiritual Master (with 'izajah' permission and khilafat from all the spiritual orders), a phenomenal orator who has spread the message of Islam to the four corners of the globe for the last 35 years, highly respected amongst the Ulema and Mashaykh all over the world and chosen by their father as the successor Janesheen despite being the second youngest.

Mashallah, Good thread.
I became mureed the same year Hadrat Sarkar e Kalan Rehmatullahi ’Alaih came to the UK. Though my heart was always set in becoming a disciple of Shaykh al Islam many people naturally swore allegiance to Sarkar e Kalan that year. But an elder explained to me at the time that if i were to become mureed of Hadrat Sarkar e Kalan Rehmatullahi ’Alaih i would be exempt of the 'faiz' and blessings of Shaykh al Islam but if i were to become mureed of Shaykh al Islam i would gain their blessings and Had.Sarkar e Kalan Rehmatullahi ’Alaih as well as they would be my 'Dada Peer'. Alhamdolillah this was the icing on the cake as they say.
Once one becomes a mureed they should obtain the Shijra Shareef. Hadrat Shaykh al Islam advise the mureeds to pray certain 'wazaif' after every salah and the Shijra Shareef. This is very important.
