One must realize that it is very difficult for one on his own to understand the commands of the Quran therefore the commonfolk will consult with the Ulema regarding these issues. The Ulema would have not understood anything if the Mujtahid Imams of Islam(Imam Abu Hanifa Imam Sha'fee Imam Hambal, Imam Malik Radi Allahu anhuma )had not clarified aspects of the Sunnah and fiqh. The Mujtahid Imams received guidance from a chain of teachers linking them to the Sahaba Radi Allahu anhuma who in turn received guidance directly from Sayiduna Rasullallah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam. From this, one can deduce that the teaching of the Quran and Sunnah has reached us via a chain of teachers from the time of Sayiduna Rasullallah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam. If it was not possible for one to understand the Islamic Law without the aid of a chain of teachers, how would it be possible for one to attain success on the mystical and spiritual path of Islam without the assistance of a guide.
If one attempts to interpret the Quran and Sunnah with his own limited knowledge, not taking guidence from the teachers,he will become amongst those who have gone astray.Hazrath Moulana Jalaluddeen Rumi Radi Allahu anhu explains this concept in his famous Mathnawi Shareef in which he says,"That once there was a group of men in india who had never seen an elephant. One day they came across an elephant in complete darkness and all of them began touching it.After a while they describe what they thought they perceived and all their descriptions were different.he who held the leg thought the elephant was a pillar. The one who held the ear, described the elephant to be a fab and so on.However,as far as accurately describing what they had come across, they all fell short. If only they had a candle there would be no different of opinion and by the light of the candle they would have revealed the elephant as a whole".
Allah commands in the glorious Quran,"O You who believe!Be mindful of your duty to Allah and seek a means to approach Him"(Sura Al Maida,verse35)
What is this means to approach Allah? Hazrath Shayhk Sayyid Abdul Qadir Jilani Radi Allahu anhu states that a murshid is to be accepted as a link and a mediator between himself and his Lord, and also as a method and means to attain Him.He further says that the spiritual guides are the road to Allah, the signposts to it,and the gate by which it is entered. For every seeker of Allah a spiritual guide is therefore indispensable(necessary).
