Urs is the commemoration of the day the noble Saints and Prophets demised from this Dunya (world). The word "Urs" has been taken from Hadeeth : "Sleep just like the bride" [Mishkaat Shareef], The Angels say to the pious in the grave : "Sleep with restfulness and comfort just like a bride"
It is said in Al-Qur'aan that we should show appreciation for Allah's many bounties. These Great Awliya are one of the many bounties of Allah Subhaanahu Wata'aala. Not only are they the Signs of Allah, but the Sign Makers of Allah!
To celebrate the day the pious made pardah of this world is a source of Allahs' pleasure because this is the day they had made a 'union' with Allah Ta'aala.
Hadhrat Moulana Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Dehlwi (RadiyAllahu Anhu) writes that
if the day if Urs is meant for invocation or reminding for the deceased ones, there is no harm. That gives benefit to the living as well as the deceased ones. [Fatawa Aziziyah]
Alhamdulillah, this is essentially what transpires at an Urs... A reminder of the life lived by the pious person, and a sharing of the person's wisdom with emphasis to the example they have set for us. (especially in their true love for Allah and His Rasool Sallalahu alaihi wasallam).

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu '' To celebrate the day the pious made pardah of this world is a source of Allahs' pleasure because this is the day they had made a 'union' with Allah Ta'aala.''Mashallah a much needed topic. After the Beloved Prophet's (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) demise, Hazrat Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu)prepared a good deal of food on the 12th day, and on reading Fateha, he entertained the people of Madinah with it. He had so much of food prepared that it was enough for the people of Madinah. People began to enquire ; "What is today?" Those who were knowing replied, "Today is the 'Urs of the Messenger of Allah, today is the 'Urs of the Messenger of Allah." It has become evident from this that the noble Companions celebrated the 'Urs of the Noble Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam). (Fathul Ma'ani)

Sallams a great topic to start with, i don't see why people are so against the idea of an Urs. It is an opportunity for the zikr of Allah azawajal to take place naats and Quran is recited what is wrong with that? ? personally speaking i dont think there is!!!!!!

## A verdict given by Shaikh Jibril Haddad
The term `urs, although an Arabic word for marriage, is not known in the above sense in the Arab world to my knowledge. Such celebrations are usually called Mawlids, the practice of which is allowed and encouraged from East to West with the conditions you mentioned. The life of Barzakh is a reality as are the God-given benefits and blessings of the righteous in Barzakh. The evidence for this can be read in the specialized books such as Sharh al-Sudur by al-Suyuti.

The word "Urs" has been taken from Hadeeth : "Sleep just like the bride" [Mishkaat Shareef], The Angels say to the pious in the grave : "Sleep with restfulness and comfort just like a bride"Some scholars also explain the reference to the word Urs in that, like a bride waiting in anticipation and with excitement of the consumation of the marriage for the first time, when her new husband will come to her and she will experience an intimate closeness like never before, so the awliya etc wait in anticipation and excitement of 'meeting' their Creator and feeling the extra closeness when free from this world. This is not suggesting the two experiences are similar, rather it is a similitude of the comparative feelings.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
WE are so lucky to be from the Ahle Sunnah wal Jamaat, the aswad-e-Azam (the saved sect) because we are able to commemorate the anniversaries of all the sahaba-e-kiram, the sufia-e-kiram, the many walis and aulia-e-kiram, the great Ulama-e-Ahle Sunnat (ridwannalahi'majmaim) and the many more traditional and classical scholars who have cemented the foundations of our deen which were laid by Nabi-e-Akram (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam).
May Allah Almighty increase the status of all the pious ulama and give us all tawfeeq to continue to pay our respect and visit many more urs.
