Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam, The sponsorship of charity events, which is the undertaking of a sport or activity in order to raise money for a good cause eg. Third world, cancer, aged, or homeless has no hard and fast rule for it to be haràm, non-permissable, or disliked. But because this is common in secondary schools, then it is a good way for the school to engage a pupil in a voluntary event which will raise cash for those who are in need, as long as that need is a genuine one. The Noble and Most Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu Ta'ala alayhi wa Sallam) was a great example of The One who would help those who were in need. Goods would be given for FREE for those who were in dire need. In the month of Ramadhàn, he would be more generous than the wind which is in a storm. Everyone would benefit from Him (peace be upon Him). The question is not a legal one but rather a more humanitarian one in order to help those, who are in need. That is why give Zakàt, which is obligatory, give sadaqàt, hadya, and khayràt, so that those who need it the most, can sample some ordinary life like ours, by having food, water, heat, light, a better health and so forth. In summary, people should sponsor those who are in need, and not hold back especially if the needy are Muslims. This will train the sponsor to be more responsible, and the giver to be more generous. That is what Muslims are, responsible and generous people! Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) knows the best. M. Waseem Ashrafï
