Assalaamu alaykum, Dear Imam, I hope this finds you in good health. I have a question about buying houses on interest bearing mortgages. I understand in the Hanafi Madhab it is permissible to buy Houses on interest bearing mortgages in a Non Muslim country. I read that it is permissible from the following link: www.taajushshariah.com/Fatawa/bankinterest.htmlBut my question is are we allowed to buy more than one house, which is more than needed in the sense that we are only buying more houses to make money? Or is it only permissible to buy a house on an interest bearing mortgage when there is a need? Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Allah Hafiz

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam Thank you for your question. I have always stressed, that to buy a house on interest by obtaining a mortgage or a loan, because a person was in dire straits to obtain a property of his own for shelter suffices the obtaining of the mortgage rule. However, where a person buys more than is needed, for business purposes, then prevention should take place, as there are other methods and means of generating income other than that of obtaining loans and mortgages. The summary is, that a person should prevent obtaining interest on motgage and loans, unless he is compelled in doing so. The buying of houses and flats for interest purposes, is not the only form of business and acquiring money by other means is an option that is available to him. He should prevent form obtaining interest for this purpose. A hadith states that all 'mushtabih', (doubtful things) should be prevented as they may lead to misguidance. So where there is the avail of making money by other means of business, then obtaining loans and mortgages on interest should be prevented. Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM.
