Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,All Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam)Jazak'Allah for your question. It must be remembered that all creation of Allah the Almighty, is His creation, and is a blessing from Him, and that it should be appreciated. This includes all animals. Some animals are kept in the house area so that people may gain sustenance from them, for example goats, which is a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ( Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam), as well as cows. People can then gain milk, chesse, butter etc. from them, and have a means to live on. Sometimes, people have to keep animals for security. For example, a dog. This is allowed according to a view of the majority of the scholars, but only for protection from thieves and bandits, who may try to rob your goods and posessions. However there is an exception for keeping dogs, as dogs which are kept in the house, prevent Angels of Blessing from entering the house, as dogs which are kept outside, for security, do not fall under the general rule. This rule can be found in Ahadith books like Muslim and Bukhari Shareef. There is no hard and fast rules that state that we are not allowed to keep pets in the home like cats, parrots, fish, and budgies, as long as these animals do not cause destruction, or make your home infested in any way. The above named pets are easy to keep, and can be taken care of, as some animals may make life hard, in that they can be time consuming, and efforts which could have been placed on better things, are then focused on keeping pets. If pets were not allowed in the house, the Beloved Messenger of Allah ( Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam), would not have let Hadrat Abu Hurayrah ( Radi Allahu anhu), be seen with the cats, hence gaining his title 'Abu Hurayrah', 'the father of the cats'. Nor would He ( Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) have ever kept a horse, or a camel. Then is there the possibility of keeping other animals, other than these? As mentioned above, if the person has the means of looking after, keeping clean, not mishandling animals which do not take up a lot of time, then it is permissable to keep these pets, as they may also be part of a blessing, from Allah the Almighty. It also must be remebered, that animals also offer ' tasbih', to Allah the Almighty, just as humans do, and that they should also be treated carefully. May Allah the Almighty, give us the opportunity to treat His creation with care, and may He prevent us from keeping those animals which His Most Beloved Messenger of Allah ( Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam), has prevented us from keeping.
