Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
This question is asked on behalf of a friend.
I would like to know what the Shariah says about adopting a child who is non-Muslim. The couple can not have children and have been on the waiting list for a long time, now they have a child that has been offered to them, but was born to non-Muslim parents. They are really eager to adopt and feel they can not let this chance go as they don't know how long it would be until they get this opportunity again. Its a very long process but they do want to do it the right way.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Allah Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa SallamJazak'allah for your question. In a hadith of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam it is stated: 'kullu mawludiy yuladu 'alal fitrati' 'Every child is born upon it's own natural fitrah. If he is left alone he is not misguided, but if he follows his father or grandfather, he may turn to a Jew or a Christian'[/i] This hadith shows that every newborn, or young child is born upon the correct path, until his mother or father start misguiding him into other religions, as stated above. However by not letting him be misguided, they can teach what the correct path is, and what the Unity of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala means. It is through the teaching of the parents, that the child becomes older and begins to realise which one is the true path. This hadith relates to the type of question you have asked, as if you are adopting him, for the pleasure and love of Allah the Almighty, then it is perfectly permissable, as opposed to adopting him for the sake of yourself, because you have no children. May Allah the Almighty protect all our children from the misguidance of parents, and may we all follow what the true path is.Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
