wine vinegar should be avoided as all(100%) the wine does not convert to Acetic acid(vinegar).

It is also referred to as grain vinegar or distilled vinegar.I use the Muslimconsumergroup website. I think it's one of the best sites about halal/haram info. But the website says spirit vinegar is a halal vinegar. I don't understand. If alcohol is used then how is it halal? wassalamu 'alaykum

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuTypes of VinegarThere are six type vinegar used throughout the world: 1. Distilled White or Grain or Spirit Vinegar: It is produced from the natural fermentation of dilute alcohol to vinegar. The vinegar is filtered and contains Natural mellow aroma. 2. Apple Cider Vinegar: It is produced from unprocessed apple juice and vinegar retains its natural amber color and fruity flavor.
3. Wine Vinegar: Wine vinegar is produced from Burgandy wine and other wines. It retains a ruby color and wine like flavor. It is used in Oil-Vinegar Dressing and gourmet cooking and condiments. 4. Corn (Maize) sugar Vinegar: This type of vinegar is produced from corn sugar. Sugar is first converted to alcohol then alcohol is converted to acetic acid and water. It is also a amber color vinegar. 5. Malt Vinegar: Malt vinegar is produced from the fermentation of malt to alcohol and then it is converted to vinegar. 6. Specialty Vinegar such as Balsamic Vinegar: Balsamic vinegar is produced in Modena Italy from white and sugary Trebbiano grapes with special labor intensive method to special flavor and aroma There is possibility of left over wine in this vinegar. Halal Status of vinegarThere is a different of opinion among Hanafi and Shafi fiqa schools regarding vinegar. There is also different of opinion among Islamic Scholars regarding wine vinegar. Since there is possibility of wine being not 100% converted to acetic acid and water. There is left over wine in the wine vinegar, we consider wine vinegar not a Halal vinegar. We recommend distilled white vinegar because it is made from dilute alcohol. Please consult your sheik or Imam on this topic. Taken from Muslimconsumergroup.comWassalamu 'alaykum

Still very confusing for me, so is the majority vinegar type haraam as the process converts to alcholol even though the end product is alchohol free? What about certain vinegars especially cider vinegar which has a 0.5 or 1% showing on the label is this percentage not referring to the alchohol content.

Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuThe only vinegar classed as 100% halal by the Muslimconsumergroup is distilled white/grain/spirit vinegar (which I don't understand because diluted alcohol is used in the process). The other types (so the majority) is not classed as halal as there may be residue alcohol in the end product. About the percentage on the label of cider vinegar, I don't know what it stands for brother. Wassalamu 'alaykum

Assalam O Alaikum
Both white and red wine vinegar are not Halal because of three things:
1. The alcohol(7-12%) in wine is not 100% converted to acetic acid and water, so there is possiblity of left over wine in the wine vinegar.
2. The flavor and all organic compounds developed during making of wine are not converted to any thing because the Acetobacter bacteria is only work on alcohol to convert it to acetic acid and water. Every component of wine is Haram so thus the flavor and other organic compond. This is the reason all non alcoholic wine and beer are not Halal because they made from real wine and beer. There are leftover of both. The flavor and other componds remain as is. The alcohol is seperated by filteration technics in non alcoholic wine and beer.
3. The color in the case of red wine will not change during the converstion of alcohol.
According Muslim Shareef wine vinegar is not considered Halal by Imam Shafi.
Apple cider in UK is a fermented apple juice with alcohol. Apple cider in USA is a non fermented pasteurized apple juice. Hard Cider in USA is a fermented apple juice. In order to make the cider vinegar in USA, cider has to be converted to fermented cider or Hard Cider can be used to source the alcohol. In UK alcohol is already present in cider.
Most vinegar in the world is produced from cider(both fermented and non fermented), grape, sucrose, glucose or malt. First these products has to be converted to alcohol by alcoholic fermentation then through acetous fermentation where alcohol is converted to acetic acid and water. The acetic acid content in vinegar is measured in grains where 10 grain is equal to 1 % of acetic acid. The figure you see on the vinegar bottle is the grain number for acetic acid not alcohol.
Distilled white vinegar is made by the acetous fermentation of dilute distilled alcohol without addition of color. It is also called Spirit vinegar or grain vinegar. It has 4 gram of acetic acid.
The left over alcohol in vinegar is dictate by the vinegar process, if they used dilute distilled alcohol, there is no left over alcohol because they started with dilute alcohol(means with added water to alcohol). This distilled or grain or spirit vinegar is widely used in the world for its usage in food products. Cider vinegar is also may not have left over alcohol because of vinegar processing methods. So distilled white or grain or spirit or cider vinegar are Halal. The conversion of alcohol to acetic acid and water is the example of Tabdile Mahiya in Islamic Sharia
I hope this clear the confusion, some brother reported on this post.
