Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Dear Imam,
I hope on receiving this e-mail you are in the best of Health & Imaan. I am writing this e-mail with regards to Zakat calculations. At present I have a student loan outstanding of £5414.20 which some amount is taken out of my monthly wage for repayments. I also have some savings and wanted to know how to work out the zakat i need to give. I understand it is 2.5% of every £100 but need to know how the debt is taken into the calculation.
Please could you respond to this as Ramzan is soon approaching and I am worried about this. In anticipation of your reply. I hope to hear from you soon.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam You have already answered the question in your post when you said 2.5% for every £100, the amount of money you save after giving your monthly instalments, you need to give, 2.5% of that, whatever that is, that will make your zakat for the year. Its a must that you calculate it in this way, as there is no way out except to pay it. Also make sure it is given every year, to the correct people, that is the poor neighbours first, then whoever is close to them, then those close to them, and so forth, also students in Dar-ul-'ulums abroad for the students expenditure, orphans, and the needy. If this is impossible, send it to some reliable place where you know it will be spent in the appropriate manner, like Muslim Hands, Islamic Relief etc. Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
