Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam Isma'ilis is a sect amongst the Shi'ites which believes in the 7 Imams. It is also known as the 'sab'iyyah'. The reason why they are called Isma'iliyyah is because Hadrat Imam Ja'far Sadiq Radi Allahu anhu had granted sainthood to his son Imam Musa Kazim Radi Allahu anhu, rather than Isma'il. It was upon this that there became a split of two between the believers. First of the two was the former Imamiyyah, or the ithna' Ashariyyah, and the other the 'sab'iyyah' or 'Isma'ili', which was in support of 'Isma'il' as their Imam. Since Imam Isma'il died while his father was alive, this is why they (the Isma'ilis) regarded his son, Muhammad bin Isma'il to be in the place of the seventh Imam. This sect, then became famous in different areas of the world, with various names. The sect was known as the 'Qiramata', 'Duruziyyah', and the 'Batiniyyah', which are some of the branches of this particular sect. In Iran, the members of this sect were known as the 'Isma'ilis' or the 'Agha Khanis', whilst in India, they were known as 'Bohras' or 'khojas'. The basis of the faith ('aqidah) of this sect is that they believe that the 'Masih' will return once again, and will also be known as the 'Masih-e-Maw'ud'. Thus the Shi'ites, have regarded the Family of Syedina 'Ali Radi Allahu anhu to attain this right. One sect amongst these have regarded the 'Imam' to be from the ahl-al-Bay'ah, which appears from generation to generation. This sect was known as the 'Imamiyyah' sect. In future, this sect was then distributed into two sects, the 'Ithna' 'Ashariyyah', and the 'Isma'ili' sect. According to the 'Isma'ilis, the last Imam of them is Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ja'far, who had disappeared some time after the death of Hadrat Imam Ja'far Sadiq Radi Allahu anhu. It was for about 100 years that they remained with this belief ('aqidah). In 899/276h. a leader of theirs by the name of Ahmad bin Qaramitah gained much publicity, thus adhering to the name 'Qaramitah'. In 874/260h. when the 12 Imams of the 'Ithna' Ashariyyah' were deemed complete, the 'Isma'ilis also made changes to their belief ('aqidah), and once again made recommendations therein. At this point, those people who remained on the old tradition, were known as the 'Qiramitah', while the 'Fatimids' (Fatimiyyah) adopted the 'Isma'ili' faith, and laid their foundation for 'khilafah' in 909/ 297h. in the North of Africa... Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
