Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam It is not wrong to put flowers of the graves of Muslims, especially the graves of the awliya'. The graves of the saints are a sign of Allah the Almighty. It has also been instructed in the Qur'an Sharif that the signs of Allah should be revered. The verse which corresponds to this action is: 'Wa may yu'azzim sha'a'irallahi fa innaha min taqwal Qulub'
'And whoever will rever the signs of Allah, then indeed this is a good act of the heart'.It is now evident, that there are no restrictions placed upon revering the signs of Allah, as they are all good actions. Since the shrines of the awliya'Allah are the signs of Allah the Almighty, then looking after them, respecting them, revering them and honouring them are some of the good actions that the heart discloses. In addition it is in compliance to the word of Allah the Almighty, as it has also been proven by the hadith of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, which mentions the placing of the branch which was split into two, and then planted into the ground so that the punishment of the dwellers of the grave could escape punishment, due to the backbiting, and the carelessness in urinating. Of course there are other ahadith which mention that all the greenery, which include trees, plants, animals, flowers, grass, weeds, and other objects of life which all praise Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, do seem to prove the tasbih, tahlil, tamhid, takbir, of these objects, specifically flowers, when they are placed onto the grave, as the longer they remain alive, this is what they do, and once they lose their fragrance, or die, then they are replaced with others. This also gives opportunity for the devotees to respect and honour, whether in groups, or singularly. However, the object of the action being made permissable (ja'iz), and unchallengeable, due to the extensive proofs from the Qur'an Sharif, ahadith-e-mubarikah, tafasir, fatawas, and other sayings of the predecessors, imams, and jurists. Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
