I have noticed a lot of events now popping up, that is Islamic events held at hotels and auditoriums where you have to pay to listen to a scholar or shaykh ? These speeches usually are all in english and have nasheeds etc. While im all for this type of thing for but given a choice especially if one is out of work why should they have to pay to educate yourself in Islam. This isnt exactly good dawah, for any potential Muslims who wish to to discover Islam. £15-20 a ticket for five or six hours is scandalous when you have to pay for your own refreshments afterwards as well.
In this day and age with biased media and false and deviant groups parading their propaganda literature for free, we should be even more determined. We must step up the campaign for more free and open Islam awareness classess !!

Not sure about paying for the Imam or speaker. As for nasheeds, well some of them seem to have styled them selves on pop groups. There emphahsis seems to be more on catchy tunes and rhythms rather than the important lyrics.

What about King Georges Hall, Blackburn during the urs, we dont have to pay then, and we have all the best Ulama available plus Naats,English speeches and food all free.

Good point, although a lot depends on the resources of the organisors of these events, and whether they suitably sized Mosques to accomadate such events. One has to be critical if events are overtly expensive, because one can learn most things from the books of the traditional scholars, however there is an exception with great Ulema like Shaykh al-Islam, Ghazi-e-Millat and Sebhan-ul-Hind, these Pir Sahebs knowledge is so vast that no amount of books can contain within.

I have not experienced this yet in any event held by ahl-e-sunnah so i was surprised to read about it. May be im wrong, but the only pay on entrance ive been to is where they are holding a fundraiser for a siutable cause.

I think the likely of such occurences are when we have visiting foreign Imam's and Shaykhs who only speak in English to a wider and younger audience. Usually these scholars arent affiliated to any Mosques or organisation and have to have independent functions. Naturally the hired events and the scholars travel expenses have to be covered.

Fair enough but im sure if they asked the local Sunni Mosque, providing it was big enough they could hold their talks there ? This way the Mosque and community benifits, the visiting scholar doesnt have to pay for the expense and most importantly its free for everyone.
