Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem ASALATU WASALAMU ALAYKA YA RASULLALLAH Salla Allahu 'alayhi wa Sallam
Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
I read this story about a mother whose daughter converted to Islam. The mother did have problems with it she admitted but what really made her sad she said was that her daughter had another (Islamic) name. The name she gave her daughter was given with much love at her birth and she asked if it is possible to keep your old name in Islam.
For the new brothers and sisters... What was your old name? Do you have a new name? How did you get it? And is it obligatory to have a new Islamic name?
Wassalamu 'alaykum

It is not obligatory to have a new name when someones converts to Islam as long as the non Islamic name does not have a bad meaning that will have a negative effect on the character of the person. Also the name will have to be changed if it is the name of idols or a false god or false prophet or an enemy of Islam.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
I've had a few names, when I was born I was Paul Davison, then I was adopted and given the name Andrew, then after embracing Islam 10 or so years ago Alhamdulillah I changed my name to Mohammed Suhayb. As mentioned it's not compulsory to change your name provided you don't have a name with a negative meaning it was just something I felt I needed to do. I have legally changed my name so as my passport etc is in my Muslim name. I don't expect my Parents/Family/Friends to call me by my new name but they do seem to respect my reasons for changing it.
