Indian Troops Involved in Killings for Rewards: IHK HRCSubmitted by Aurangzeb on July 22, 2012 – 5:03 pm Srinagar, July 20 (KMS): In occupied Kashmir, the Human Rights Commission has conceded that Indian troops were involved in ‘killing for sport’ for undue promotions and rewards. Commission member, Javaid Kawoos, during a panel hearing of a petition filed by Ghulam Rasool Tantray, father of Muhammad Akbar Tantray, who was killed in a staged shootout in 2000 being branded as a militant, observed that there must be some check and balance to stop army personnel from undertaking “these incidents of killings in illegal operations for promotion.” Muhammad Akbar Tantray along with another youth was killed by the Indian troops in Divar Lolab village of Kupwara on Jan 31, 2000. The victim was branded as a foreign militant. The commission directed the police to reopen the case and start investigations to bring those responsible for the staged shootout to justice. Ghulam Rasool Tantray, father of Muhammad Akbar Tantray, in the petition said that his son was picked up by the army personnel and was killed along with another youth in a fake encounter. He said that he had later identified the body of his son through a photograph taken by villagers who buried the victim after it was handed over to them by the troops. Meanwhile, the commission has sought reply from Indian Home Minister about the killings of 27 innocent Kashmiris in an unprovoked firing by the troops in Kupwara on January 27, 1994. The petition was filed by renowned human rights activist, Muhammad Ashan Untoo.
