Assalaamualaykum Wa'Rehmatullahi Wa'Barakatahu I have a question regarding hakuk-ul-ibad,I know if one muslim hurts another muslim's feelings he would not be allowed to enter into heaven even if he had followed every principle of Islam, but what if a person asks other to forgive him for a mistake and he does not forgive him? What does Islam say about forgiveness and its ajar? Please give me References from the Qur'an and hadiths. Jazaka'Allah Khair...

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu Praise be to Allah who is the Master of all the Worlds, and may Numerous Salutations be bestowed upon His Final Messenger, Our Propet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam)Jazak'Allah for your question. There is a difference that needs to be explained regarding 'huquq ul 'ibad', and forgiveness about mistakes. First of all 'huquq ul 'ibad' are all those rights, that a person owes to his fellow human being. These range from being truthful towards his fellow human being, not taking what does not belong to him, treating him fairly, justly, with equality and so forth. As far as forgiveness is concerned, then this is something which differs from individual to individual. For example, someone may not be as forgiving towards another in committing a crime, whereas a practicing Muslim may forgive another for the same crime. Allah the Almighty is the most forgiving. One of the names of Allah the Almighty is 'Ghafoor', the One who Forgives. This Attribute of Allah the Almighty can reflect upon the hearts of His men, from whomever He pleases. Similarly, this attribute may not reflect upon some, if He choses for it not to reflect. Now lets look at a few Qur'anic verses, which contain this attrbute of Allah the Almighty: 'was taghfirullaha inallaha ghafurur Rahim' (al Muzammil, 73, 20) 'And seek forgiveness from Allah, certainly Allah is the Most Forgiving, Ever Merciful'In this verse, Allah the Almighty orders people to seek forgiveness from Him, as He gives to those who seek it. Another verse states: 'wattaqullaha inallaha ghafurur Rahim' (al Infal, 8, 69) 'And fear Allah, certainly He is The Forgiving, and The Merciful'This verse tells us that we should fear Allah, that if we do, we shall find Him to be the Forgiving and the Merciful. 'Wa rabbukal ghafuru dhur Rahmah' (al Kahf, 18, 58) 'and your Lord is The Forgiver, Full of Mercy'This verse describes the attributes and characteristics of Allah the Almighty, as being The One who Forgives, and as being 'full of Mercy'. Thus there are numerous verses, around 72 verses which describe Allah the Almighty as being 'Ghafoor', The forgiving. So, if we are to believe in Allah the Almighty, in the manner which He expects us to believe Him, then we should also know His characteristics, and His attrbutes, so that when we need to, we can reflect upon those attibutes and characterisics, by practicing them. All the great sufis, and scholars, and all the great men and women of Islam, all had these attributes of being merciful to one another, being forgiving, being generous, asking for forgiveness, being merciful etc. which indeed reflect upon us. But until we dont practice what He has commanded us to do, for example what you mentioned above, not only the 'huququl 'ibad', but also the 'huququllah', then we can never be identified as being amongst those who practice our rights properly. When someone makes a mistake, and asks for forgiveness, he is doing what Allah the Almighty has told him to do. But when one is asked to forgive, then he is taking up the Sunnah of the Almighty Allah in forgiving that person. So what is more greater than practicing what the Almighty Allah is doing all the time. May Allah the Almighty help us all to ask for forgiveness everyday in our lives, and may He keep us away from all forms of evil, and may He help us practice to forgive others also, so that we may uphold His practice.Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM.
