Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
Dear Imam..
If one claims to be a Sayyid but there Shajra. Its been losted due to some reason,is there any other way to find out..
Should one except that one is a sayyid if been told and should one ask for proof to clarify it,if they cannot do we except.
Do we have a right to ask a sayyid to proof there linage.
jazakAllah

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa SallamJazak'allah for your question. There are many Sayyids who have a shajrah, and there are many Sayyids, who will be known as Sayyid, but may not have a shajrah, due to unforseen circumstances. The ones who normally carry a shajrah would be the more 'established Sayyid', but this does not prevent Sayyids who do not carry a shajrah, as proof of not being a Sayyid. When someone states that someone else is a Sayyid, then we should not challenge that, but we should accept that, as being a ' Sayyid' is virtuous, and the not so virtuous, should not in fact challenge the virtuous, as it is demeaningful, disrespectful, and not according to Islamic teachings. Situations as such are best for those who are Sayyid themselves, to rectify. Not for a non-Sayyid.Has someone ever asked for the proof of your lineage, as lineages other than the Sayyid lineage do exist. If someone did, and you were unable to provide the proof of yourself being for example; a Rajput, or a Choudhry, or whatever your lineage was, then wouldnt this seem inappropriate for you? If it did, then the same would be felt by a Sayyid, as he may feel discouraged, modest, or even relentless in stating. A hadith in the Bukhari Shareef states that Hadrat Sa'd Radi Allahu anha heard the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam say that: 'Whoever asserted himself to a different father, and his father was different, then paradise is forbidden for that person'
(Bukhari)
From this hadith, we see that no Muslim, who had the knowledge of this hadith would ever claim himself to be from a lineage, from which he really was not. If he did, then that is for him to suffer, on the Day of Judgement, and the next world. May Allah help us to speak the truth at all times, in our lives.Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
