Assalaamoe ‘alaikoem
How are you? - As you know that if a person wants to fast he/she can eat the Sahri before the time of Fadjr. When I was young (yet mature according to Islam) my parents taught me that I could still eat the Sahri during Fadjr-time but before the sun was to rise I must stop eating. Alhamdolillaah, I now know that this is a very great misconception of my parents (who don’t really take the islamic rules very serious). So my ‘fasting’ of the days I used to eat during Fadjr-time isn’t legal. I also know that one should undergo a penalty ( the Keffaara) for breaking his fasting without a good reason. Should I undergo this penalty (for my misconception of eating during Fadjr) or should I just fast one day for the compensation of the actual fasting-day?
- My parents also taught me that if I don’t eat the Sahri at all, I am not allowed to fast that day. This is also a great misconception. Should I also undergo the Keffaara for the days I used to do this or should I just fast one day for the compensation of the actual fasting-day?
May Allah reward you abundant for your help and may Allah grant us prosperity. Peace and prayers be upon our Prophet Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam.
Wassalaam

Bismilahir Rahmanir Rahim Wa'laykum as-Salaam, It is good that you have touched upon the subject of Ramadhaan-al-Mubaarak, even before it has appeared. May I suggest to you that first of all, the fast is obligatory (fard) on all those persons who are sane, capable, and of mature age. Secondly, the time of sehri, begins according to the time tables in this country, and according to the Islamic states before the very first adhaan. This time is a special time, in that it is Sunnah of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam to perform sehri. This time is before the BEGINNING TIME of Fajr Salaah, Lately, because of winter, the beginning time of Fajr Salaah, has been very close to the ending time of Sehri, because of the time limit (i.e. winter months of Ramadhan in this country, have a later time for the Sehri ending time). Therefore it is reasonable to say that all those timetables that do not submerge into any Fajr beginning time, are valid. Any times that do go over or beyond Fajr time, then if committed intentionally, then kaffarah must be given, if unintentionally, then the fast must be performed again (without kaffarah). Allah the Almighty knows the best.M Waseem Ashrafi
