Asalaam o'liekum
By smelling an ointment for a headache or rubbing the ointment such as tiger balm or vicks does this or any other products break your fast or make it makruu?

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu This is quiet a good question, in relation to fasting in the month of Ramadhan. We know, from the books of fiqh, that if a person who is in the state of fasting, deliberately smells smoke, or any kind of substance, that will make a difference in his being, while he is in the state of fasting, then it will render his fast to be break. The reason for this command (hukm), is that the particles, that are contained in the medicine like vicks, are snorted, and as a result, the particles do reach the top of the nose, the airways from our nose to the mouth, and sometimes the brain. Any kind of substance, that reaches any of these areas intentionally, will cause the fast to break, and if not will render the fast to be 'makruh', at the least. This issue (mas'alah), is a similarity of the issue, that water should not be snorted strongly, or great emphasis should not be placed when gargling the mouth, in a state of holding a fast, as they can make a fast 'makruh', although it was done unintentionally, whereas using a substance like vicks, which is used intentionally, can cause a fast to break, whose re-fast (qadha') will be necessary. In essence, all substances that are snorted, like vicks, should be kept away from, during fasting. If however they are used on the body, and are not strong in odour, then it is perfectly permissable.
