Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu

Jazak'allah for your question. It is true that it isnt fard, wajib, Sunnat-e-Mu'akkidah or masnun to kiss the prayer mat. If you did it out of love, because it was to satisfy yourself that you indeed love the prayer, and you do place so much value to your prayer, then I dont see why the sister had scolded you, in such a manner which upset you in any way.
There is no limits placed upon actions which are done out of love, that are permissable (ja'iz), that the shar'iyyat has not prohibited.
May Allah the Almighty give us all the tawfiq, to remain firm upon the five times daily prayer, which is enough in the eyes of Allah the Almighty, and may He keep us from quarreling over irrelevant points which are not relevant to what we do in Islam.
