assalamualaykum
i was recently reading zuhr namaaz and in the third rakat i should have read a surat after surah-fatiha but i forget and only remembered in sijda. so then i read 2 rakats after that making my namaaz 5 rakats instead of 4. i also did sajida-sawar. but i'd like to know what i should have done as this doesn't seem like the right way to either me or my husband. jazakallah khair

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam Thank you for the question. Sorry for the delay. It is not compulsory to recite a surat in the third rak'ah, after the surah-e-Fatiha, nor does it render you to perform sajdah-e-sahw because you forgot. It is actually sunnah to recite a surah, and reward is given for the extra-effort you make in doing so. However, if you do forget to recite a surah, as was in your case, your salah will be valid, and it will not be void. It does not require you to change the amount of rak'ahs you have prayed nor does it entail you to perform sajdah-e-sahw. In future, if you do forget to recite a surah after the fatiha, then just remember that there is no need to perform the sajdah-e-sahw, nor is there the need to change the number of rak'ahs that you have performed. It is just a lessening of reward, which we would have otherwise recieved, had we prayed the surah. However, to recite the Fatiha is compulsory, and salah is not valid if the Fatihah is not recited. This is the major difference. May Allah the Almighty help us all to perform His salah in the best manner possible. (Amin). Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
