Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem,
Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,Thank you for your question in relation to what makes meat halal, from the Qur'an. May Allah the Almighty bestow numerous blessings upon you. The Qur'an states: 'fa kulu mimma zukiras mullahi 'alayhi in kuntum bi ayati hi mu'minin.'
''Then eat of that upon which the name of Allah has been pronounced, if you believe in His signs'
and: 'wa ma lakum al laa ta'kulu mimma zukiras mullahi 'alayhi'
'And what happened to you that you should not eat out of that on which the name of Allah has not been pronounced.' These are two verses from the eighth chapter of Surah al-Anaam, verses 118 and 119. (Translation of Kanz-al-Imaan.) and: 'inna ma harrama 'alaykumul maytata wad dama wa lahmal khinziri wa ma uhilla bi hi li ghayrillahi'.
This verse of the Noble Qur'an is in the second chapter of Surah al Baqarah, and is verse number 163. It's translation is as follows: 'He has only made unlawful to you the carrion, and blood and the flesh of the swine, and the animal that has been slaughtered by calling a name other than Allah the Almighty.' (translation Kanz-al-Iman) At the time of slaughtering, the animal must have recited upon it : 'Bismillahi Allahu Akbar'
'In the name of Allah who is the greatest'. In addition, it is also a condition, that the person who slaughters the animal, should be a Muslim, or one of the 'People of the Book' ( ahl-al-Kitab). However, even if a person were an apostate, or a polythiest even by reciting the above, the animal would not become lawful (halal) for the believers. It is thus evident, that if Bahirah and Sa'ibah are slaughtered in the name of Allah the Almighty, it makes them lawful. The same applies to those calves that are set aside by the Hindus for their idols. This makes the animal that is set aside for the 'Ghiyarween Sharif', in the name of Sayyad 'Abdul Qadir al-Jilani Radi Allahu anhu, as lawful and sacred, because it too is slaughtered in the name of Allah the Almighty. The same could be said for all those animals that are set aside for the numerous predecessors/saints/pious people. So long as they are slaughtered in the name of the Almighty. (commentary Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Na'imi Rahmatullahi ’Alaih). May Allah the Almighty give us the susteneance which is halal, and may he prevent us from having any haram, (amin). Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
