Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam I will give you a couple of verses from the Qur'an, as a summary for the prohibition of gambling: a) 'Yas'alunaka 'anil khamri wal maysiri Kul fihima ithmunn kabirunn wa manafi'u linnas, wa ithmuhuma akbaru min naf'ihima' 'They ask you in relation to the order of alcohol and gambling, say that in both of them is a grave sin, there is however a worldy benefit therein, but the sin is greater than the benefit.' In the exegisis of this verse, Hadrat 'Ali Radi Allahu anhu had stated that if a drop of alcohol falls into a well, and then a minaret is constructed upon that well, I would never give the call for prayer (adhan) from there. He Radi Allahu anhu also stated that if a drop of alcohol ever fell into a river, and that river turned dry, afterwhich grass grew there, I would never herd my cattle there. The tafsir Ruh-al-Bayan, states that anything upon which cards are played (eg. poker, cards etc.) are all prohibited, and classed as haram. Another verse revealed in relation to the prohibition (hurmat) of gambling is: 'Innama yuridush shaytanu ayuqi'a baynakumul 'adawata wal baghda'a fil khamri wal maysiri wa yasuddakum 'an dhikril lahi wa 'anis salah fahal antum muntahun.' 'The shaytan wants to put ties and enmity amongst you, in alcohol and gambling, and wants to prevent you from the rememberance of Allah and salah, did you prevent yourselves from that?' The previous verse states: 'Ya ayyu halladhina amanu inamal khamru wal maysiru wal ansabu wal azlamu rijsum min 'amalish shaytani fajtanibuhu la'allakum tuflihun'
'Oh you who are the believers, alcohol, gambling, idol worshipping and drawing arrows are all impure satanic deeds, thus prevent yourselves from it, so you may propsper.' (Qur'an, Ma'idah, 90/92) The above verses point out the prohibition of alcohol and gambling as they cause enmity between men. They also take up time which would otherwise have been used in the dhikr of Allah the Almighty, and salah. Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
