asalamalaikum,
what is the best permissable way of reading the Quran at home?
Is it best to pray sitting on the floor or on a sofa or chair(with the Quran supported by a cushion.)

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim.
Wa'laykum-as-Salaam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuhu.
So long as you have ablution (wudhu'), have clean clothes (possibly Islamic), your head is covered, and the place is clean where your Qur'an is kept and recited, then you may recite the Qur'an-al-Karim either on the floor with the Qur'an on a rail, or on a sofa with the Qur'an on a cussion, or on a chair with the Qur'an on the table, as long as the table is kept clean and in a clean place. These are some of the possible ways that are permissable (ja'iz) ways and places of reciting, and placing the Qur'an.
What we must remember importantly, is that the Qur'an should never be touched without ablution (wudhu'), as the Qur'an states: "la yamassuhu illal mutahharun." "none shall touch it but the purified ones" (Qur'an, 56:79) and also it should be kept in a clean place, as it says: "fi kitaabimm maknun" "In a well preserved book" (Qur'an, 56:78), stressing that not only should it be preserved in the hearts of men, but also from the reach of non-Muslims, and from different treatment to their books. That this is the honourable Qur'an : i]"innahu Qur'anun Karim".[/i]
So these verses of the Noble Qur'an prevent us from touching the Qur'an without ablution, letting anyone touch it, and to put it in places where it shouldnt belong. May Allah tha Almighty, give us all the strenghth to know the importance of the Qur'an, and help us to handle it in the correct manner that he prescribes.
Wallahu a'lamu bithawaab.
