Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu In the Qur'an, in the twenty seventh chapter of Surah-tul-Waqi'ah, Allah the Almighty says: 'inna hu la Qur'anun karim, Fi kitabim maknun, La yamassuhu illal mutahharun'. 'Undoubtedly this is an honourable Qur'an, In a well preserved book, None shall touch it but those who are pure.' From this verse of the Holy Qur'an, we can see that the Qur'an can only be touched by those people who are pure. Purity, comes from the physical cleanliness, just as the hand belongs to the physical body. By physical cleanliness we mean either ghusl and/or Wudhu'. If it meant any other cleanliness as some people claim, like the purity of Iman or Islam, then the Qur'an would have clearly stated this. In addition, the flow of the Qur'anic verse in it's meaning, would not have achieved its fullest meaning by not mentioning these words. Finally, those verses of the Qur'an, that talk about the purity of Imaan and Isalm, have been used in a totally different context to what has been used here. In essence, a person must have wudhu', when he touches the Qur'an, or when he recites the Qur'an. May Allah the Almighty help us all to honour the Qur'an, in the way Allah the Almighty expects us to honour it. Wallahu A'lamu Biththawaab. M. Waseem Ashrafi.
