Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam If you did not know that an Imam was a shafi'i Imam, and you went and prayed behind him, you will still have to read your salah as though you were a Hanafi. Your salah will still count. But if you had a choice of praying behind a Hanafi and Shafi'i imam, then obviously, it will be common sense to pray your salah behind the Hanafi imam, because you are Hanafi. In any case, it is not a matter that you salah will not be valid, because it will. Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
