Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam Thank you for your question in relation to the hadith, which is known as the 'hadith-e-qirtas'. The word 'Qirtas' means paper, and is known as this because before the Beloved Messenger of Allah
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam passed away (wisal), He
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam asked for a piece of paper, and a pen to be brought to Him, so that He
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam could write a few things down, so that it would prevent His ummah from going astray. The hadith appears in Bukhari Sharif, 7 times, and is as follows:
'Hadrat Ibn-e-'Abbas
Radi Allahu anhu narrates that when the Beloved Messenger of Allah
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's weakness through becoming ill began to worsten, He
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam requested for some writing material, and said that
'I will write something down for you after which you will never be misguided.'
Hadrat 'Umar
Radi Allahu anhu stated that the Beloved Messenger
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's pain was increasing, and that the Qur'an which is the book of Allah the Almighty is sufficient for us.
There was some difference expressed amongst those who were present, and conversations lenghthened, at which stage the Beloved Messenger of Allah
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam stated
'get up from here as it is not appropriate to make arguements near me.'
Hadrat Ibn-e-'Abbas
Radi Allahu anhu came out as he was saying
'It is a big difficulty, a great difficulty which has created a barrier between the Beloved Messenger of Allah
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam and His writing.
The Hadrat Umar
Radi Allahu anhu who is referred to in the hadith is amirul mu'minin Syedina 'Umar Faruq
Radi Allahu anhu, and should not be adressed the way you had, in the question. You quoted:
'Who is this "Umar",'
We should never try to adress the Beloveds of the Beloved of Allah
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, in such a way.
The reason why Hadrat 'Umar
Radi Allahu anhu said that the Qur'an is sufficient for us is because He did not want the Beloved Messenger of Allah
Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam to go through any more pain that was already being overcome him. Just imagine if you are dying of pains from death and you request a pen and paper for the people, and a devotee expresses that it is o.k. that the book of Allah is sufficient for us, and that you dont have to go through the trouble of writing. Many people have taken this point to be one of cotroversy, and make imputations and assertions that are negative against Hadrat 'Umar
Radi Allahu anhu, which is totally utterly, and most profoundly false.
For a more detailed study of the hadith, then in Arabic, the commentary on Bukhari Sharif, which is widely studied by scholars, called 'umdat-al-Qari sharh Sahih Bukhari, by 'Allamah Badr-ad-Din 'Aini Hanafi, or if you are a Urdu reader then, the Fuyudh-ul-Bari sharh Sahih Bukhari by Syed Mahmud Ahmad Rezwi, details all the presumed accusations of people and their justified answers to such assumptions.
May Allah the Almighty guide us rightly in relation to His Chosen Ones, and may He keep us all away from false presumptions and accusations.
Jazak'allah for your question.
