Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa SallamJazak'allah for your question. Yes there is a way of checking the spiritual status of a person. Probably in most books of tasawwuf, the Asfiya' (gnostics) have laid down the criteria of the spiritually fit person, and he who has no benefit at all. In simplifying the criteria, it can be shown as thus: a) Engaged in the dhikr of Allah the Almighty at all times, if not, most of the time. This includes firmness on the five times salah, according to its appointed time, and in congregation. ( jama'ah). b) Since the dhikr of Allah the Almighty is the key to success, it is stated in the Qur'an al kareem: 'ala bi dhikrillahi tatma'innal qulub'
'Indeed with the dhikr of Allah, do hearts attain satisfaction' (al Qur'an) There are over fifty instances in the Qur'an al kareem where the word dhikr has been used alongwith it's benefits. Therefore the more a person will be engaged in the recitation of the Qur'an, in it's research, in ahadith, tafasir, books of fiqh, other awrad, and adhkar, will Insha'Allah determine not only how close one is to Allah the Almighty, but also how a person feels, mentally, physically, and spiritually. However, one should not try and attain the same status as those 'pious predecessors' who have already been accepted in the presence of Allah the Almighty, nor should they dwell into certain actions before which permission has not been granted, by a qualified Sufi, or teacher. May Allah the Almighty help us all to strive hard in the path of Islam, and may He grant us stations that are close to Him, and His accepted people.Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM.
