Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa’alaykum 'Asalaam, The History of numbers originates from the early times of Islam. It is asserted that from the knowledge known as ‘jafar’, that unknown events can be found out. ‘Jafar’, is based upon the science of numbers assigned to the letters of the Arabic alphabet. As you may be aware, there are twenty eight letters in the Arabic alphabet. Every letter has a specific number assigned to it, and the numbers can range from one to a thousand. Based upon the twenty eight stages of the moon which it surpasses, every stage is affixed to a separate letter, and every letter is affixed with a specific influence. Bearing these influences in mind, the famous branch of knowledge known as ‘ilm-ul-aathaar’ had been created from the the science known as ‘ilm-ul-a’daad’. It is according to the rules and regulations of ‘ilm-ul-aathaar’, that symbols (nuqush) and the amounts of recitation (awraad) are composed. Such recitations (awraad) used, also include verses from the Noble Qur’aan, which accord with ‘ilm-ul-aathaar’, in order to create various influences. The second branch of knowledge which stems from ‘jafar’ is known as ‘ilm-ul-akhbaar’. According to the rules and regulations of this science, it is by asking questions, that letters are formed in order to achieve answers, thus realizing events the events that have occurred either in the past present or future. Research has shown that the inventors of this knowledge were the Hebrews, but the way in which it has gained its popularity and advancement today, shows that it is the Arabs who have had the lead in this. To the extent, that some great believers, connect this science to our Master the Prophet (peace be upon Him), Hadrat ‘Ali, and Hadrat Ja’far Saadiq (may Allah be pleased with them all). Similarly, if you take the ‘bismillah’, and assign the numbers of ‘jafar’ to it, you will get 19 numbers in proportion to the 19 letters of the ‘bismillah’. It is when these are added up, that one gains the total of 786. Moreover, if you take the name ‘Muhammad’ (peace be upon Him), and assign the numbers of ‘jafar’ to it, you will get four numbers, proportionate to the number of letters in Muhammad, which is four. It is when these are added up, that one gains the total of 92. Wallaaho a’lamo’bithawaab M.Waseem Ashrafi
