Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu Praise be to Allah Almighty who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalaihi wa Sallam)[/i] Jazak'Allah for your question sister. In Islam, there is a a science known as the science of numbers, also referred to as 'ilm-ul-a'dad. Each letter in the Arabic alphabet, has a number assigned to it, for example, in the word Muhammad, the 'mim' has the value of forty, the 'ha' has the value of eight, again the 'mim' has the value of forty, and the 'dhal' has the value of four. If all the numbers are added together you get the number ninety two. Similarly, in the 'Bismillah', there are nineteen letters in Arabic. They are as follows: 'ba' = 2 'sin' = 60 'mim = 40 'alif' = 1 'lam' = 30 'lam' = 30 'ha' = 5 'alif' = 1 'lam' = 30 'ra' = 200 'ha' = 8 'mim' = 40 'nun' = 1 'alif' = 30 'lam' = 200 'ra' = 8 'ha' = 10 'ya' = 40 'mim' = 40 These are the letters of the 'Bismillah', and the digits that are assigned to them in the science of numbers ('ilm-ul-a'dad). If you add these numbers you will recieve the total of 786. Sometimes, alongwith 786, the numbers 92 are also found beneath it. These are written as an introduction to whatever your purpose is and is believed to be a means of gaining blessing (barakah), and have been described above. May Allah the Almighty, give us the opportunity (tawfiq), of learning as many sciences there are that are in connection to Islam, and may He make it a means of success for us, in this world, and the hereafter (Amin).Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM.
