Assalamu 'Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
I am aware that a newly born baby should first of all be given a wash and the Azan should be recited in the right ear and the Iqamat in the left ear.
I have read that The Beloved Prophet Muhammed (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) said that the child in whose ears these two prayers are recited would be safe from the incidence of epilepsy.
Why should this be done to the new baby and are there other benefits for the Azan and Iqama being recited in the baby's ears?
JazakhAllah khair

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and May Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa aalihi wa Sallam) Jazak'Allah for your question. The adhan, when it is said, is said to have such an affect on the shaytan, that in the books of hadith, and fiqh, it is related that he 'runs and breaks wind', because of the fear, from the name of Allah the Almighty, and His Beloved Messenger ( Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa aalihi wa Sallam), this is one benefit of saying the adhan, and iqamah in the babies ears. Another benefit, like you mentioned in your post, is freedom from all, if not most illnesses. These can range from leprosy, epilepsy, sadness, ill temperament, bad temper, the severity of fighting, and from being burned alive as is quoted in 'Bahar-e-Shar'iyyat'. Similarly, for the purpose of safegarding, protection, defence, security, shield, shelter, guard, conserve, and save the child, the adhan, and iqamah is delivered into the babies ears. I hope that this theme of benefits for the child, is observed by yourself as being beneficial, and that may Allah the Almighty, have us all under this form of protection for all our lives, and our childrens lives.Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM.
