Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam Jazak'Allah for your question. Wasilah is a means or medium of asking Allah the Almighty through either His Beloved, or His servants. The al-Mawrid dictionary has translated it as, means, medium or agency. The al-Munjid dictionary however, states that: Wasala, yasilu, wasilatann wa wassala wa tawassala 'ilal lahi bi 'amlinn aw wasilatinn : means to gain the closeness of Allah he Almighty, to find a way, to gain closeness, rank or status.Wasilah is permissable, and from certain ahadith it shows that such a practice was not prohibited, during the early times of Islam. The concept of wasilah is demonstrated in the following hadith: It is narrated from Hadrat Anas Radi Allahu anhu, that in the khilafat period of Hadrat 'Umar bin Khattab Radi Allahu anhu, whenever a famine arose, Hadrat Umar Radi Allahu anhu would use the medium and the means of Hadrat 'Abbas Radi Allahu anhu in order to gain rain. They would state:
'Oh Allah! Before this we would place your Beloved Messenger Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, as a means and a medium in order to gain rain, and you would give us rain, now we place the uncle of the Beloved Messenger Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam as a means and medium to gain rain so bestow us with rain'
and it would rain [Hafiz Abu Bakr Ahmad Bin 'Ali Bayhaqi (458h), Sunan Kubra, vol.3, p.351-53, as-Sunnah publications, Multan] The above hadith clearly shows that this practice, was a practice of the Noble Companions of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, as it also shows the wording within it, or the type of wording that should be used. It further shows that it is not shirk to call upon the servants of Allah, by making them a means to wasilah, and that other servants of Allah the Almighty may also be called upon, in a similar way. A hadith of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala alayhi wa Sallam states that: 'Alaykum bi sunnati wa sunnati khulafa-e-Rashidin'
'Upon you is my sunnah, and the sunnah of the guided khalifas' Thus it would not be far to say that, if Hadrat Umar Radi Allahu anhu had practiced asking using the means of someone other than Allah the Almighty, then in order to fulfil the sunnah we should also use the same means in asking, so that we may fulfil such a sunnah. As far as the question relating to jinns is concerned, then they are also a creation of Allah the Almighty. They sometimes can overpower other creation just as some of the humans can overpower them. But this normally happens to those people who remain in an impure state, and do not care about hygiene. If such an occurance does happen, it should be left to the specialists to sort the problem out, and one should not try to delve in the matter himself. It requires a great deal of understanding, practice, empowerment, and devotion in order to be successful, and should not be merely regarded as asking for a wazifah. The situation could be more severe than that. May Allah the Almighty give us all the tawfiq to persevere, and have patience, especially in this great month of Ramadan. And may He help us to be firm upon His Beloved Messenger Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam's, sunnah, and the sunnah of the Ennobled Companions of His. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
