Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem Wa'alaykum 'Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa BarakatuhuAll Praise be to Allah who is the Lord of the Worlds, and may Endless Blessings be showered upon His Most Beloved, and Final Messenger of Islam, Hadrat Muhammad Mustafa Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa 'aalihi wa Sallam Basically a Sunni is he, who follows the aqa'id, which are the principles in Islam, of all those reckognised 'ulama' who knew the differences of all those groups, who either doubted, slandered, rejected, declined or refused, the concepts, principles or teachings of the ahl-as-Sunnah wal Jama'ah. Such groups have had differences with the ahl-as-Sunnah wal Jama'ah, in issues relating to the essence (usul) of religion, rather than the branches of knowledge (furu'). One such group is the Wahhabi group who claims that Allah the Almighty has similar attributes (physical) of those which a human would posess. Such beliefs are false, and contrary to the beliefs of the ahl-as-Sunnah wal Jama'ah, therefore the name Sunni comes from the aforementioned name. This is just one example, other examples include other beliefs relating to Allah the Almighty, beliefs relating to the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, beliefs relating to the Ennobled Companions of the Beloved Messenger of Allah Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, the Tabi'in, the Taba' Tabi'in, the Aimmah-e-Din, the Mujtahiddin, The Sufi Saints, and beliefs of the common Muslims as a whole. Any persons or group of persons who hold beliefs contrary to the belief of the ahl-as-Sunnah wal Jama'ah, so long they are recognised differences, then it is a majority verdict of many of the scholars that the salah of a person praying behind people with such bad beliefs is not accepted, in the presence of Almighty Allah. May Allah the Almighty safegard us all from having false beliefs, in relation to the persons mentioned above. May He make us conform to the beliefs of the ahl-as-Sunnah wal Jama'ah, and the majority of Muslims of the world. (Amin). Jazak'allah for your question. Wallahu A'lamu BiththawaabM. Waseem Ashrafi
